5wide Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 ...who will be coaching the Colts next season? Any guesses? This is one situation where it seems like they would want to keep a lot of the current staff in place. Would they promote someone from within to the head coaching job to maintain that continuity, will they try to get a big name, or will they go through the process and pick the guy they like the best and are most comfortable with? I mean, if I were a coach, and I suspect most coaches feel this way, I'd want to be able to bring in a staff I was comfortable with and install my own philosophy, etc. It's hard to see the Colts letting Tom Moore go...of course, any incoming coach may not tinker with the offense anyway. It's just an interesting (possible) situation to me if Dungy leaves. This is a team one year removed from a title and the consensus #2 team in the NFL, and there's really no signs to indicate that they're on the verge of any kind of significant drop off...it's not a common situation in the NFL for a team in this situation to be looking for a new head coach. From what I've read, it seems that the general feeling is that the probability favors Dungy hanging it up. Any thoughts on this?
saint4 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 They promote their Offensive Coordinator to Head Coach, then promote Peyton Manning to Player/Coach as Offensive Coordinator.
born2reign Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I think Dungy would have a hand in picking his successor, which means it could go to a Dungy disciple, like Herm Edwards or Lovie Smith.
Pat Dad Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Dungy will be back. Yesterday's loss left a bad taste.
HOMELESS CAMEL Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Maybe the Colts could take Marvin Lewis, his entire staff and a few players.
bigblueinsanity Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Dungy will be back. Yesterday's loss left a bad taste. I agree.
RockPride Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I think if Dungy does indeed retire, Jim Caldwell will named the Head Coach, I wouldn't look for Tom Moore to go anywhere either.
born2reign Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 ESPN's John Clayton reported that Jim Caldwell would get the job if Tony retired.
5wide Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 ESPN's John Clayton reported that Jim Caldwell would get the job if Tony retired. That answers my question...I didn't know if the Colts had anyone in place, and if they did who it was, to step up if Dungy left. That makes the most sense to me...this team is pretty much set. I'd want to maintain as much continuity as possible, and keep my staff in place. There's no way I'd let Tom Moore leave...the offense would be left alone. That's the reason I asked, because I thought it would be a bad move to bring in a new guy and I didn't think they'd want to do that.
5wide Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 I don't really expect Dungy to return. From reading his book, his faith takes #1 priority in his life and if he feels that God is calling him to make a move, he'll do it. Perhaps he feels like his time is up in Indy. Also, he's a man who's very concerned about his assistants and what their fates may be and in this situation it seems the Colts are in position to maintain everything as is, so no one would be affected. I think that is definitely something he'll consider. I could be wrong, but from reading his book and other things I've seen and read about Dungy, he doesn't seem like the type of guy who does a lot of back and forth...if he feels like he's ready to step down as Indy's coach, then I think he will. And from all accounts, it seems as if a lot of the players have the impression that it was Dungy's last game.

born2reign Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Too bad he couldn't have gone off into the sunset with another championship ring. A class guy and I hope he enjoys retirement
5wide Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 I found it interesting that Jim Caldwell withdrew his name from consideration for the Falcons job. Maybe it's nothing. Then again, maybe he knows something...
Covercorner Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Wonder in the near future if we start talking about the Tony Dungy Coaching Tree, and it's impact on the NFL. Herm Edwards Lovie Smith Rod Miraneli Mike Tomlin Monte Kiffin Mike Shula amoung others.
