Mason C0's most recent win over Nationally ranked Mt. Vernon (Kevin Jones - Bob Huggins/WVA signee) was huge and I think this sends a message to Kentucky teams that they have their work cut out for them.

 

Im not crowning them yet but they have 3 outstanding players in Miller/Middleton/Setty and a host of other great supporting players. Is there a team in KY that will be able to beat Mason Co this season?

I feel that they are the best team in the state right now. But as we all know on any given night.....anything can happen. But they definitely have the bullseye on their back. All teams will be giving them their best shot, and trying to knock off #1.

Much as I support the Royals, there are any number of teams on their schedule and throughout the state that are capable. A whole bunch of them in the 7th and 11th regions alone; and Elliott County will present an interesting matchup. The 10th might not be the cakewalk that a lot of folks are predicting, either.

 

That being said, playing clutch down the stretch last night, making free throws and valuing the basketball, are signs that this Royals team has matured.

 

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see the Royals lose a game here and there. Like anyone else, you just hope your team wins the last game they play.

This is key. The regular season is just stepping stones to prepare you for post season play. Dosn't really matter where you are ranked if you beat a team by 20 in regular season and then lose to them by 1 in post season.

I remember several years ago when Ashland was ranked #1 in the state. After the finals of the the region.....the headlines in the paper the next day read.....Ashland #1 in the state...but 2nd in the region.

As I said in the other thread, after what happened in the 10th last year, I'm not counting ANYTHING til that scoreboard clock tells me it's okay to do so. :lol:

 

Looking at their schedule at the beginning of the year, I figured they might have at least 5 losses or more. That wouldn't be a slight against the team, their schedule is that tough. They still have the 5/3rd. They have Scott Co at home, Lexington Catholic on the road, that Atlanta Centennial team, whoever that might be. As papa said, conference games are tough as you get later in the year, regardless of how easy the win might seem on paper.

 

I just want the kids to stay healthy and continue to improve and play hard and "hopefully" everything will take care of itself as March gets here.

Mason wins this tourney and runs the table this season or should say if they win this tourney they will run the table this season. Elliott hasn't seen anything in the mountains like this freight train. Mackey-less Scott may make a game of it for awhile.

Tonight's game and tomorrow's game aren't part of a tournament. It's more of a round robin thing. Long story to explain, let's just say it involves issues with the KHSAA and the New York High School athletic association and their teams playing a team from another state that doesn't affiliate with a state high school athletic association.

I would have to agree that they are sending a loud and strong message to everyone on their schedule. I said it before and I will say it again, barring any injuries they will win the 10th region and probaly make it to Saturday night in the Sweet 16 tourny in March.

Usually a big upset will take place when the favored team's best player has an off night or the underdog team has a player that just has an outstanding night shooting.

 

Neither of these situations took place as Mason Co. beat Mt. Vernon.

 

Mt. Vernon's best player actually had a better then normal night and Mason Co. was struggling from behind the arc.

 

Mason Co. still hung in there for the win.

 

We all will find out in a couple of hours if the Royals are deserving of a top 20 ranking in the national polls. :fire:
