Do you follow big-time high school basketball? If you did you would know that the top teams in the country fly all over the place all the time to play in these tournaments, heck they are on ESPN weekly any more. There is nothing illegal, non-compliant, unethical, etc. etc. about Mason Co. or any other team going to Hawaii to play in a basketball tournament.

 

I don't know how close to the Mason Co. situation you are but I and anyone else close to the situation can reassure you that the Mason Co. administration, AD Fred Hester, Head Coach Chris O'Hearn etc. are some of the most competent and honest people in the business. I promise you fairness and compliance is checked and double checked on any athletics business from travel, to practice time to uniforms.

 

Instead of trying to poke holes in the Royals trip, as a fan of KY HS Basketball you should be proud that a program like Mason Co. and players like D. Miller, Chris Lofton, etc. etc. are representing your state on big stages in such a classy way.

 

I wish them nothing but the best and hope that other teams from the 10th get such opportunities in the future.

That is great but still doesn't explain funding and how this they are Title 9 compliant. I do agree that this is a great opprotunity for the kids, but if shoe sponsers are paying for the trip it's not the sign of a strong program just the sign of greedy shoe companies trying to get a jump on Miller!

 

I believe this is a tournament put on by Nike. Mason Co. is one of a handfull of high school teams in the nation that Nike is sponsoring. Im not 100% certain, but believe Nike may be covering hotel expenses for players and coaches.

I know there are several of us here on the board that have traveled a lot and have gotten a chance to experience this great country and the world in some cases.

 

I know that some of these kids might never get a chance to do something like this again and I can only imagine the emotions some of them might be having.

 

Looking at Iolani, the first team the Royals play, they have played 2 or 3 games and the scores have been in the 40's I believe. Which leads me to believe they want to dictate pace, slow the game down and play some hard nose defense. If Mason Co can speed the game up, they "should" win that one.

 

This tournament is essentially two tournaments of 4 teams. Mason will avoid playing Arlington Country Day and the team from China, since they are in the other 4 team bracket.

 

If the Royals are fortunate to win that first game and take on Mt Vernon, they have scored over a 100 points already in a couple games this year and won each of their first 5 games or so by 50 points. So I would guess they are pretty good. :lol:

I think you have taken me all wrong and I don't need to be reassured of anything involved with the program. I am not poking fun at Mason County, if you would read some of my other post above you would know how I feel about the Royals and their trip. For example go back and read post #15 and there is my feelings towards their trip. I know that the school and its administration and athletic director dot I's and cross T's as I believe I said that in an above post. There is questioning of how the trip was funded with Nike and all and there was an above poster that wanted to know, which by the way was the same poster that brought out the name Nike and was bringing out things that weren't factual. That is what I was poking fun of with my fundraising ideas. Gee, sorry but you took me the wrong way. If you would look at my other post you would know that. By the way I am a big time basketball fan and there was never anything I said that stated anything was illegal and uncompliant or anything else you said.

Scott County is wearing Nike...but there is a difference from wearing Nike and being sponsered by them. I think back in their hayday Catholic may have been sponsered by Nike. If they are paying for hotel's, trip could easily been afforded. Typically hosts pay for hotels, meals, and even provide transportation.....I have been to a big time high school tourney that provide our team three Chevy Escalades (sp?). Good luck to Mason on the national stage!

How does this bracket work. I understand if they win playing Mt. Vernon or Roosevelt, but what about the Rice game and the other game and then advancing????? Just wondering?:confused:

It's a tad odd when I first looked at it. :lol:

 

It looks to me to be a mini tournament of 4 teams. There are other teams at the tournament, I'm just looking at the Royals mini bracket.

 

Mason Co

Roosevelt - Honolulu, HI

Mt Vernon - Mt Vernon, NY

Leilehua -Wahiawa, HI

 

If they win their first game against Leilehua, they then play the winner of Roosevelt and Mt Vernon. After that, their next two games are already set. Regardless of whether they win or lose Friday, they play Iolania Saturday. Then I'm guessing they fly back here on Sunday.

 

Friday against Rice from New York

The 16-team Division I tournament begins today with the usual matchups of Hawai'i teams vs. Mainland/foreign opponents: Roosevelt will face Mount Vernon (N.Y.) at 3:30 p.m., followed by Leilehua vs. Mason County (Maysville, Ky.) at 5, Saint Louis vs. Rice (New York) at 6:30 and 'Iolani vs. Ji Lin (China) at 8.

 

Tournament director Glenn Young said the change is due to New York and Kentucky state association rules that prohibit their teams from competing against schools that are not members of their own state associations. Montrose Christian, as a private school, is not part of the Maryland Secondary School Athletic Association.

 

With two teams from New York and one from Kentucky, Young said it was very possible that at least one of them would have eventually been pitted against Montrose Christian in a traditional winners' bracket.
