Mason County In Hawaii

Featured Replies

I think this is an absolute awesome trip that these kids get to be a part of. Kudos to the Mason County program and the leadership of the athletic department, Coach Ohearn and staff. I can assure you that things are done first class and respectable and all the I's are dotted and T's are crossed in compliance. I would like to look at it as a reward and recognition to the program and kids on developing a solid program through many years of hard work on and off the court. National recognition, support from the fans(around 100 fans made the trip) follows kids that do the right things, programs that do the right things, and that is why Mason County is in Hawaii and I hope that they represent the state of Kentucky in a way that we can all be proud of. Best of luck to the Royals.

That is great but still doesn't explain funding and how this they are Title 9 compliant. I do agree that this is a great opprotunity for the kids, but if shoe sponsers are paying for the trip it's not the sign of a strong program just the sign of greedy shoe companies trying to get a jump on Miller!

Where is it stated that shoe companies are paying? Other than what a poster stated above in a question of this, where are you receiving this information from?

Good to hear the boys made it safe. I heard through the grapevine that the team might be making another trip in 2 years. How many years ahead do they have to plan for a trip as big as this?

Where are you getting shoe companies,Theres no shoes involved at all! They raised there money themselves and I'm sure the sponsors of the tourney have to give some to each school also. The girls are going to Canton,OH if that helps your title 9 thing for 3 days Next week.Anybody that wanted to go could have gotten ticket for 700 when the school sold them so im sure they paid no more than that per kid i would say less as this was what it cost for the fans to travel.

mhighfield, I understand and appreciate your clarification of how Mason County is justifying Title 9. What I don't understand with the justification of Title 9 in this matter is what is equal about one team soaking up the sun and enjoying the dream vacation to Hawaii while the other team is in the extreme nothern part of Ohio in the dead of the winter? It took 13 hours to get to Hawaii by plane and it will probably take the same amount of time for the Mason girls to travel to North Canton with all the snow that hits in between Maysville and North Canton.

I totally understand that,But its what invitation you accept and get offered also. Its not like the Girls could just call up a tourney and say we want to play there,Most of these big tourneys are invitation only.:thumb:

It's stated no where, just know that it is common practice for high profile players to get there teams courted around the country by high profile sports companies. I also utilized common sense in knowing that if you take 10 players and probably 4 coaches that is going to cost the school at least 30,000 dollars, and no car wash or banner fundraiser is going to bring in that much!

Are you looking more into this than there is. I hope they do well and I am sure that everything is legal.

Unless you are thinking he is going to the Pro's right out of High School, which we all no he is NOT. Then a shoe deal for him is ridiculous, He is going to U.K. and if they are sponored by nike, then thats what he will where, or Adidas then thats what he will where, ECT. ECT. NO kid in college has a shoe deal, not sure what you are thinking about. If everything goes well at UK and he gets drafted and a shoe company wants him to endorse a shoe then good for him untill that happens there won't be any deals..... GOOD LUCK to the Royals, represent the State the way it Deserves, and don't forget the SPF 15.

Not negating that it may not be a shoe company but the bottom line is WHO or WHOM funded the trip, not arguing that Mason County is not going to represent the state well, they are a finely tuned, well coached basketball squad. But, if other programs want the same opprotunity it would be nice to know how to raise the that kind of money to be able to go.

That really doesn't seem fair to any sophmores that may be on the team. Would they have had the same policy if this trip was two years ago? :sssh:

Nobody is going to respond to this one I guess.

If its not a known fact, then why bring forth information about a program that is simply not true?

sumoroyal did post that there is a sophomore on board in Hawaii.

They took their varsity team. It just so happens at this point in the season that consists of: four seniors, five juniors and one sophomore. Not to say that won't change come tourney time, and that is taking into account the three upperclassmen that have left the team since the season started. It wasn't a matter of only taking so many players, it was the fact that this is how the varsity team has dressed out thus far this year.

Mason County took ten players including Phil Barner who is a Sophmore. MC had orginally planned to take 12 players but some of the orginal players are no longer on the team so they took 10 players. Also, heard the team arrived safe and sound and was in their Hotel around 3AM (EST).

Thanks. I don't know how I missed that the first time. That's good to hear. I didn't think it was right to leave any sophmores that were part of the varsity team. That sure wouldn't have been good for team unity.
