Elliott picks up their 7th win of the season against their first top 25 foe. Jon Morgan gave Elliott a huge lift off the bench in the 2nd half.

Congrats to the Lions on a nice win! If I heard correctly, the Christian county game plan included an attempt to wear Elliott County down, knowing that the Lions had played the night before, they substituted freely and deeply into their bench the entire game.

Christian Co. just about came back to win in the 2nd half due to the pure fact that the coach didn't sub at all and the boys were very tired. Congrats to Elliott, lets just hope your coach learns that he has a bench so he should use it like every other coach.

Looks like Elliott may be the real deal this year.

Elliott will need to go to the bench more to make the run they are capable of.

The first time I've seen th elliott boys since the played in the State tourney last season. I watched three quarters before I had to leave. Elliott was up 15 and apparently had the game weel in hand. Heres what I saw;

 

1) The Faulkner boys look to be stronger in the upper body( probably been in the wieght room). As always, tenacious competetors, great ball handlers and passers. Evan was on fire the first half. Ethan controlled the tempo and distributed the ball. Evan played great defense on Shaquile Wison (Didn't he look like Snoop Dog).

 

2) Jonathon Fergason is an unbelievable pure shooter with great range. He is a threat anywhere in the half court. When he catches the ball most of the time it is going up. The rainbows were hitting all net last night.

 

3) Timmy Knipp is much improved in large part because he is probably stronger. As he matures he will only improve.

 

4) I like the full beard look a couple of players are sporting. It's probably a little intimidating. These guys are men.

 

5) Didn't see the subs play much, so I am wondering about depth. Could be a problem when going up against teams like Mason Co, Lex Cath, Scott Co., or Bryan Station.

 

6) This team is legit and deserves the rankings, hype, and attention.

 

7) The Elliott fans travel well. What percentage of the population of Sandy Hook was at the game last evening?

 

Also many thanks to the lady from Elliott Co. that handed my son and I a free ticket to the game as I walked into the building. I guess I was in the right place at the right time, but it was a very nice gesture and i appreciate it.

5) Didn't see the subs play much, so I am wondering about depth. Could be a problem when going up against teams like Mason Co, Lex Cath, Scott Co., or Bryan Station.

 

 

Depth shouldn't be a problem, however, yesterday their coach chose not to use it. Elliott can go a strong 7 deep, including Tyler Maynard who is a phemonenal shooter. Much like Coach G didn't make any adjustments when UK blew their 14 point lead, not making changes almost cost Elliott a big win.

Its a cliche but it works " thats the best 0-4 team I've seen". Christian Co. was a very capable opponent. I've seen EC play three times this year and this is the first game I've seen them winded. I know they had to play Bath Co. Fri. night and it showed. I thought Ferguson was outstanding as well as Ev. Faulkner. Et. Faulkner is relied on to bring the ball up against pressure and CC turned on the heat in the 2nd half. The Morgan kid came in and made some very good plays, needs to play more IMO. It was a good game and EC fans should be commended on the crowd they brought, large and vocal.

 

There have been some posts about EC bench, IMO its not as deep as people think. CC really tried to wear them down and it almost worked. Its a tough call, the Morgan kid is very capable and there are others. I know there were a lot of people in the gym impressed (non EC fans) with the teams effort and talent level against a very good team. I stayed and watched some of the Columbus GA & Cin LaSalle game, the kid from LaSalle is something. He is the best high school player I've seen in a while. Wow. Two very good and big teams. That was a great bunch of games I saw, hats off to Kentucky Bank & Bourbon Co. HS.

 

There were some big "names" in the crowd. Eddie Ford "Travis's Dad", Reggie Hanson among others. I was disappointed with Rose Hill in the 2nd half, Moses from Henry Clay absolutely dominated. Jackson was off and I thought they struggled, Euton played solid, but Rose Hill is too two dimensional. I thought Henry Clay was a really good team.

 

In summary, very impressed as usual with EC effort but they wore down and lost their legs in the 2nd half. They do rely on the 3 alot and against good teams that can get you beat. CC got back in the game in the 2nd half when EC went cold. That could be a problem in tournament games if the bench doesn't come through. Or the coach doesn't decide to play them, either or. I thought Ferguson played a really really good game, let the game come to him, really stood out on the floor against some good players. He hit a big three that probably saved EC in the 4th Qtr.

You see that a lot where coaches forget they have to manage an entire game, and they leave capable players on the bench while they could have been working them in to give starters a break.

Substitutions have always been a problem with Mays. The Friday night game coupled with the bus ride and Christian County's willingness to run in fresh players almost cost Elliott County. However, they come away with a good win against a solid opponent. Morgan was good enough to start in the State Tournament run last year. They should feel more comfortable letting him and Maynard rest some of the starters a little.
