And for what its worth, I do agree with you that some of those kids would be very good additions to the baseball team. Spring football in Ky has certainly hurt the baseball programs at some schools in Ky (particularly those with strong football programs like Highlands). I've been told by Dale that he wishes they didn't have Spring football because of its effect on other spring sports. From what I've been told Dale has over the last couple of years worked hard with the Coach Johnson to make it easier for the kids interested in playing Spring football and baseball. However, football being football at Highlands, some kids have decided to concentrate only on football. But its not a one way street. There have been athletes that could have helped the football team not play football to concentrate on other sports. Simpson, Rawlings and Allen come to mind quickly. But they wanted to concentrate on the sport they like the most or think will help them best get college assistance, so you can't really get too bothered by it. High school sports have just changed a lot from the day when you saw lots of kids play three sports. It still happens occassionally; just not near as often as it used to. I think it has a lot to do with the increased level of quality taking place in almost all sports.

While I would certainly hope/expect a SAT game, it's not a requirement like it was for Hopkinsville. Given the fact that the time change hurt them and helps us, it's a 2 hour swing. Wouldn't be "ideal" to go to school, take a long bus ride, play a game and then come home, but it's certainly possible.

It all comes down to what the kids want to do. Spring football gives great opportunities for kids to shine and rise to the top. No doubt the football coaches like seeing as many of the boys as possible during spring drills.

 

It just happens to be that most of the kids that could play baseball decide that football is where their heart is. And how can you fault a kid for wanting the glory of being a Bluebird state champ football player and getting the bonus of being able to hit Siesta in the spring!
