Holmes pulls out the victory against a tough 8th region opponent. Was Layne back for SK? I thought there might be a little more scoring in this one.

Layne and Ponzer both out for SK. Early on SK had a 26-15 lead but then Holmes clamped down defensively. Their full court pressure gave SK some problems. Holmes went up by 9 in the 2nd half and SK pulled back within 5 but I believe they turned the ball over on 5 consecutive posessions. I don't have exact numbers but Henderson and Maegley had to lead both teams in scoring. Holmes is deep and athletic but outside of Henderson they don't have much firepower from the perimeter.

It was a game of the slashers vs the shooters (and even though it was in covington, thats not what I was talking about :scared:) and the slashers won. Holmes has nothing from the ouside and with Ponzer/Layne out, SK had no one to penetrate and dish. Holmes pressure killed SK.

 

Henderson is fun to watch and the kid can jump out of the gym, but Holmes has no heigth which will hurt them. Holmes really struggles to knock it down from the outside.

 

SK will struggle for a while without Ponzer and Layne. Their bench doesn't have a ton of experience to help adjust with those two being out.

Is Meagley their big center? If so I believe he had a very nice game vs. Highlands last year. Holmes sounds like they are going to rely on full court pressure forcing turnovers into easy baskets. Not having a true big man and any knock down outside shooters will hurt them. Teams that are tall and have good ballhandlers will be able to overcome their press, ie CovCATh. At this point I am leaning toward CCH as the major Fav.

Once these two (Layne and Ponzer) get back I look at SK to be making a third run at the 8th region title. If they had played it might have been a whole different game.

I seen two kids who were competeting on the court that just wanted to get in each others grill. From where I was sitting, it looked like they got tangled up and that continued as Slavey was getting up.. I never seen a kick.. Ref made the right call against the Holmes player.

I disagree about Holmes lacking height, Clark is a big kid and they have a few 6'3" guys who are long.

When Meagley was getting the ball, I thought Holmes couldn't stop him. SK did that in the 1st and 3rd quarters.

HHS had no answer for Maegley. Unfortunately he didn't play the entire 32 minutes. SK needs to be a bit more patient with some of their entries into the post.

Agree. I think every team will have a trouble with Maegley. SK will have to get through these tough times without Ponzer and Layne, once their back, they'll be solid. Just wait. Good win for Holmes.

After seeing this game, I will totally agree with you on the bold comment. IMO: Holmes has a major glaring weakness in their outside shooting. IMO: the way to beat Holmes is to play zone and make them beat you from the outside which they won't.

 

Why didn't SK's coach play zone especially when SK went up by 11? Didn't he see that Holmes couldn't make a outside shot?

No they didn't, but their coach should have had them in it. They would have had a much better chance of winning.

A zone may have helped but it still wouldn't have stopped those careless turnovers.
