Western Kentucky won its first round game against Florida A&M in 2000, before losing to Appalachian State. This was during that brief stretch in which the Hilltoppers came back to the OVC before going to the Gateway Conference.

 

The time an existing OVC team won a playoff game was in 1996 when Murray State beat Western Illinois.

So if Eastern advances far enough and so does Appy St. Maybe EKU beats Appy St.

That is what I was thinking on both accounts. I was at the '96 Murray State game. Pouring down raining. Second round Murray State was backhanded by Troy State.

 

That is a pretty sad run from the OVC.

Offensively, both teams are statistically close. EKU defensively gives up more yardage, but the overall defense stats favor EKU when you add in red zone defense and the fact that they are national leaders in turnover ratio. The CAA got more teams in based on the fact they took turns beating each other, making it harder to eliminate one or two, but one can't judge a conference because one gets 5 teams in. The OVC had "good" teams and "bad" teams. Who says their "bad" teams were worse than the CAA "bad" teams? Each conference plays a different style, but that doesn't mean another conference can't make adjustments necessary to win. The Colonels are a good team, and if the so-called experts put them a 17 point underdog, oh well. They are not listening to that. The Colonels will give it their all, and if people listen to the "experts", well, remember the App. St./Mich. game. I am a homer, but the stats call for a good game. It may not turn out that way, but I'll be there cheering EKU on! BTW, why is the CAA three times as good as the OVC? Does that mean, in your opinion, EKU will lose something like 60-20? I'd like to hear the opinions why everyone thinks Richmond is so much better. People stated their feelings. Back it up please. The qb's stats are close, the rb's stats are close. Running is running, passing is passing. Allan Holland has only throw 3 ints this season so he's cautious. IMO, the oline and dline will determine the winner. Mission Maroon! :ylsuper:

UR is the better team because they've won against much better competition. Sagarin has the Colonial as the 14th best conference in DI football versus the OVC being ranked 24th. UR is ranked 77 in all of college, EKU is 135. Massey has UR ranked 5th and EKU 23rd. The strength of schedule, according to Massey favors UR, as they played the 9th toughest schedule and EKU played the 56th toughest. Additionally, UR averages about 10 yards more per net punt average than EKU, meaning that on average, after trading punts, UR will get 10 yards better field position. Also, UR loves to control the ball with their offense. EKU held the ball on average for five minutes less than the opposing team this year, while UR dominated the time of possession against better competition. UR also converts 7% more of their third downs, again, against better competition.

 

I'm not sure why you say one can't judge a conference based upon the fact that five teams get in. That shows the strength of the conference. And yes, many of the CAA teams beat each other up, but UR didn't get beat up by any of the other CAA playoff teams. They beat them. I don't think that the CAA is 3x better, but it certainly is a better conference. UR is used to playing and beating teams that are ranked higher than EKU on a weekly basis. EKU has only played two teams better than UR and lost to both of them. They haven't beaten a team that's close to the level that UR is. A prime example to illustrate the differences between the conferences is that the OVC's offensive player of the year, your QB, has an efficiency rating of 133, has thrown for 14 TDs and 178 yards a game. Our QB, who didn't even receive honorable mention had an efficiency rating of 125, with 12 TDs, 62% completition rate and 165 yards a game. Essentially they were statistically equivalent. For one conference, it was enough to earn offensive MVP and in another, it wasn't enough to get honorable mention at the position.

 

UR wins by 14.

EKU by a little.....don't know how little but I think they have enough to over power the Spiders.
