Question: Do you think Butler and Seneca and whoever will fare any better against Tiger Ultra Traditional?

Butler and Seneca now have the structural framework to exist in a manner similar to your T.U.T program. In fact both Male and Manual closely resemble many of the aspects you stated, and are at least "more" competitive than the other schools.

 

But the real difference between Manual and St X, is that St X will have nearly a hundred kids with prior football experience enter the program every year. Publics just don't have that depth or that draw.

Why not ? aren't there more than one grade school / middle school football league in Louisville or is the parochial league the only one .

I agree. X and T both have a lot kids with CSAA football experience who choose to pay tuition instead of opting for free public school education. I think if you want to distribute the talent, level the playing field so to speak, the public schools need to have more schools like Male and Manual. As of right now, Male is at capacity and not an option any for catholic grade school graduates. Not sure about Manual's capacity. It's not a coincidence that the two schools closest to X and T in terms of academics and discipline are also the two pubic schools in Jefferson County closest to X and T on the playing field. This is just football mind you. There are lots of public school programs that kick our tails in baketball and baseball every year. We just don't recruit well in those two sports.

KYTM, you touched on an important disticntion between Jefferson County and the rest of the state. There is no public school football in Metro Louisville until high school. There are optimist programs, many of which are very good. The good ones fill very quickly and have waiting lists. Some carry 40 plus players, kids that don't play lose interest. I don't think the 8 or 9 good optimist programs is enough to sustain the 20 plus public high schools. On the other hand, the 20 plus catholic grade school football teams sustsain the 4 catholic high schools very well. For whatever reason, the participation rates for catholic grade/middle schoolers in football is much greater than that of their public school brothers.

There is no public school football in Jefferson Co middle school.

This is due to the cultural connection of football to the Catholic community, it shouldn't be underestimated.

On discipline, I have no idea. I only know X's discipline policy. But to say you're 180, what does that mean? If X is at the extreme of discipline then 180 would be the other extreme, no discipline at all.

Most of the kids there self-police their actions, the people running discipline at Manual probably have the easiest jobs in the county. I mean, what do you expect, Geeks Gone Wild? The biggest problems on discipline at Manual are a few kids cutting, and some mild pranks.

 

There is only the barest minimum of a dress code, many students have piercings and hair colors which are banned from the private schools, the students have greater freedom of expression. It's a much more liberal learning enviornment.

How does Manual do teaching kids with learning disabilities? How about kids with autism? The academic performance of a school is about more than the number of national merit scholars.

My section of the choir does quite well teaching those kids. It is one of the things that makes me the most proud to be a Shamrock. We do it, at great cost, because it is the right thing, and I dare say Christian thing to do.
