November 14, 200718 yr In this league everyone plays THIS is how high school state championships are built... BTW qryche, this statement is why you get the "good lord" every year come NKYFL talk... "My son likes the game, he's positive about it, he has the motivation to do what he needs, but he doesn't want to participate next year," the Crescent Springs, Ky., resident said. The reason is lack of playing time on his team, the Spartans. The coach gave most of the playing time to a small group of players, Zdolshek said. At least in twenty years people can reminisce about their Super Bowl Championship patch...

At least in twenty years people can reminisce about their Super Bowl Championship patch... Im with ya on this one Sticky. Super Bowl patches and jackets are definitely not in the same league with a STate championship. Very good article, Collinsworth hit the nail on the head. They did a good job of applying the new rules this year, I know a ton of kids who felt good about the season that I talked to.
November 14, 200718 yr While I personally like the Ft. Thomas system, I'll defend the NKYFL because some kids prefer a more competitive type of team. It really comes down to what kids/parents are comfortable with. It is nice if kids have both types of teams to choose from.

It really comes down to what kids/parents are comfortable with. It is nice if kids have both types of teams to choose from. Its common fact, if your kid is a stud and will help those NKYFL teams win super bowls or have a chance at winning super bowls then they will play a ton. So those parents are obviously going to support it and its competetive nature. Its the parents and players who attend the games only to watch as spectators who are wasting their time. JMO
November 14, 200718 yr How many kids (on average) are on the Ft. Thomas teams? The Spartan junior team that Mr. Zdolshek's son played on (along with my son) had over 50 players. Should the Spartans have a Spartan A and Spartan B Team? And if the teams in the NKYFL went that direction the Spartans would have to have a C Team too because surely more kids would be interested. Add to that, Dayton only had about 14 players so would they be forced to have A, B, and C teams too? Zdolshek made it known around the Spartans that he planned on starting his own league next year. I assume it would be something like the Campbell County league where everyone plays. I understand the big time players (at least at the junior level) play for the Red Devils and the best of the rest play in the newer league. Maybe Zdolshek could take his son (who was a good player on a team loaded with good/great players) to the Fort Thomas league since his son will be moving up to senior football next year. Finally, while I think the Fort Thomas league is great, what would they do if they had 2500 kids playing (this is what the NKYFL has) instead of the 400 they currently have playing? I suppose they would have six or seven times the the teams they have now?
November 14, 200718 yr At least in twenty years people can reminisce about their Super Bowl Championship patch... Sticky, I have a Super Bowl patch and a State Championship ring and I played for the Spartans so don't be so quick to judge. The Spartans have a tremendous organization (as do many of the NKYFL organizations) and everyone knows up front how the league is run and that is the teams play to win.

Now there's also a black team and a gold team because the #'s have gone up...
November 14, 200718 yr I'm glad you posted this Sticky. I headed in to post it right after reading it. Great article!

November 14, 200718 yr So do I, just not with the Spartans... Don't stand in judgment of the NKYFL then.
November 14, 200718 yr Author Does that mean six more teams total were added? I want to go apples to apples here. No, they added two teams to the original four. I have zero doubt that if they had to add 4 more teams to keep the rosters around 25 at the most, they would. They'd find places to play. Don't stand in judgment of the NKYFL then. Honestly, I have a ton of respect for those that devote their time to make the NKYFL a better league. I just don't agree with the way they do things being it's youth football. Coaching at that level, there's not a championship worth turning a kid away from the game. And there's not a better feeling, including a Super Bowl than seeing a kid that wasn't that good at the beginning of the year, succeed at the end of the year. At least to me there isn't... Don't get me wrong, FTJFL has their share of overzealous parents/coaches. The difference is, the people of FTJFL wouldn't allow the behavior to continue...
November 14, 200718 yr Sticky, Does that mean two more senior teams, two more junior teams, and two more midget teams? Add to that the Spartans already have three different teams for midgets based on ages so the Spartans have five teams total. If they had to expand to meet the magic 25 per team number (and assuming a few more kids would come out) I think the Spartans would be looking at around 12 plus teams and frankly they just don't have the resources for that. You can do things with 400 kids you have a very hard time doing with 2500 kids. Plus, Fort Thomas has the complete blessing and support of Highlands but all the youth teams are their own organizations, independent of schools in the NKYFL.
November 14, 200718 yr Does that mean six more teams total were added? I want to go apples to apples here. The Ft Thomas league tries to keep the number of kids on a team in the 20-22 range. Ideally that would be, for example, 11 5th graders and 11 6th graders with the majority of 6th graders being the "first" string that play 2.5 quartersand the majority of 5th graders being the "second" string that plays 1.5 quarters. If say all 5 teams get up into the 25-27 players range then a 6th team is formed with 18-21 players on 6 teams. That would go for all the leagues. The 3/4th grade league, the 5th/6th, and the 7/8th. Also, sort of unofficially if one team ends up with 7 kids that have to be lineman because of the weight limit and anohter team only has 1 then kids will be moved from one team to another for the next season. Once again, I know kids that thrive in the FTJRFL that would absolutely not want to play in the NKYFL. But I also know kids that would not want to play in the FTJRFL and absolutely love the NKYFL. It really does come down to preferences. I see it no different than some kids would love to take music lessons multiple times a week and want to be in competitions/recitals/bands etc. Some kids prefer to take a couple of lessons a month, play music with their friends, maybe play on their own. Some where along the line that may even switch.

I'm sorry, kind of slow the last couple of days. They add those teams to what ever division they need to. I know there was a gold team on every level, not sure about black... As for the last paragraph, that's on the high school coaches. Certainly there's a way for these high school coaches to be supportive to the youth team in their area and gain a few kids a year to their program...
