I like the professional youth football coach comment. They told me there would be a lump sum check when I am finished. It now has turned into a retirement fund I am counting on.

The only thing is I am a rookie when it comes 8 other coach's who have been in the NKYFL longer then me. I have learned lots from guys like Wayne Slusher and Keith Culp over 35 years each.

 

This has been a great thread because it has hit on all the positives and negatives of youth sports.

I was a coach who was after the Gold Ball, sad to admit. It wasn't until I started putting the kids first that I learned what it is all about.

 

Sometimes we are teaching the kids, Sometimes they are teaching us.

 

They want to all play and have fun.

 

While I agree with most of what you said and am glad to read that you learned to put the kids first, you wrongly associate "professional" with "getting paid".

 

Gryche, I don't disagree with your point. It is one of the disadvantages of having fathers act as coaches. Like I said, there are advantages and disadvantages to each method. I don't expect coaches who aren't fathers to admit there are disadvantages to the way they do it and I likewise don't expect fathers who are coaches to admit there are disadvantages to the way they do it, either. Its a wonderful world isn't it?

Every league has its ups and downs. I personally love the NKYFL. The super bowl is what you want your kids to reach for. Everyone has to have a goal. Each league has its own right way. You have to know what situation is best for your own child. The competitiveness in the NKYFL is what drives my kids, so that works best. The bottom line is that there are more kids in the area playing football and that is what matters. Getting them interested in the sport will only benefit the high schools in the years to come. Great job to all the volunteers that put forth all their effort and to all the kids that dedicate their time to playng the sport. This thread could go on forever if the right way and wrong way issues keep continuing.

Great post! But in the Fort Thomas Jr. Football League the goal Is to be a Highlands Football player and win a State Championship.

I have a son that has played in both leagues. He palyed in the FTJFL this past year and enjoyed it. He was really surprised at at how laid back everything was compared to the NKYFL. The reason we made the switch is it allows him to play fall baseball and football at the same time. If he was just going to play football he would play in the NKYFL. The reason I say this is because it is alot more competitve and playing time would not be an issue for our situation..Now if I was a parent and my son would stand on the sidelines in the NKYFL and not get playing time than he would play in the FTJFL. I guess it really comes down to your particular situation...:thumb::thumb:
