My point is that one would have to ignore the obvious and assume that White faked his reaction DESPITE the seemingly obvious look of a spit taking place.

There are at least two other explanations:

 

1) Preston said something along the lines of 'bleep you, man.' I would say very strong smack talk is often showcased along strong body language, and a head lunge like that is par for the course. This would cause White to turn to the ref to and ask for a flag.

 

2) Preston said something along the lines of 'bleep you, man' and in the process some saliva transfer inadvertantly occured. This would cause White to turn to the ref and ask for a flag.

 

Now, I realize that scenario 1 is going to be met with a chorus of 'Pat White, founder of our nation, would never lie about chopping down that cherry tree!' but I've never heard of Preston Smith lying either.

 

Scenario 2 means that we don't have to explain lying on anyone's part.
