November 2, 200718 yr So, it is the school's responsibility to determine who needs birth control and to dispense it?????????????? No. It is the responsibility of the individual who is having sex to ask for birth control materials and education. It's not the school's role to pass judgment or make determinations on who should or should not be using birth control. I would really find a study about whether people think it is a good idea for schools to teach abstinence. I would bet that the number is belwo 67% that think this is a good idea. Teaching abstinence has failed. The teenage pregnancy rate in the United States is the highest of any of the nations in the industrial world. At home, at school, at church ... it has failed utterly. That horse has already been stolen; there's no reason to lock up the barn now. Let's not teach them to be responsible, rather give them something that only MIGHT prevent it. Open your eyes and look around at the world and nation you're living in. The United States' has double the adolescent pregnancy and birth rates of any other industrialized country. One million teenage girls become pregnant each year. Ninety-five percent of those pregnancies are accidental; one-third will end in abortion. Public costs from teenage childbearing totaled $120 billion from 1985 -- 1990; $48 billion could have been saved if each birth had been postponed until the mother was at least 20 years old. Nearly half of teenage mothers end up on welfare. Less than 25 percent of births to teens occur within wedlock. The poorer the young woman, the more likely she is to become a teen mother. Less than 1/3 of teens who have babies finish high school. Dispensing free and low cost birth control to teenagers via the schools, free clinics and what-have-you is vastly more responsible than what we have.
November 3, 200718 yr I have to agree...yes some people are nuts...but right now society is nuts. To hide our heads in the sand and hope this goes away is irresponsible. When I was on the school beoad here,I used to say that soon we would be providing "Womb to Tomb" coverage before long. Before long is here. I guess my point is this..SOME parents (not all, mind you),especially in the poor rural areas, such as here, are incapable of providing the care and support for their kids, because all they have known is that the government will take care of them. Is it the school's job to provide their basic needs? NO.What happens in the 2-1/2 months in the summer then they are not in school? The school's job is to educate these kids, but without proper parental support, this is impossible. And some of these parents can't read 3rd grade level, have been kept up by the system for, now, proabably into the 4th generatiion, and these kids know nothing else. Someone has to step in,and while the school is doing it,the time spent on this is time taken away from education. An education that just might break the cycle. It is a cycle that will repeat and repeat. As Nauseum. Soap box clear,now..next!
November 3, 200718 yr So, it is the school's responsibility to determine who needs birth control and to dispense it?????????????? And 67% of the people felt it should be the school's job. 2 out of 3 felt this was a good idea. Parent's job not mine or the school's. I would really find a study about whether people think it is a good idea for schools to teach abstinence. November 3, 200718 yr I think schools are taking too much out of the hands of parents.....PH and I were very upset when one of our foster daughters brought home condoms. She had a darn sack full. That is not teaching anything...it is saying "here ya go, go do it and if you run out just come back for another sack full." The schools, teachers, no one has the right to hand my child anything like that!!!! Her being a foster child and going through what she had, she was going for help on being too promiscuous. PH and I had gone to the school and pitched a fit. We were told that it really was none of our concern what went on in school and what the kids were given. The schools need to stay out of family stuff. Frankly, they do not know what goes on at home and what the child is battling. The school is a place for learning stuff like math, history, etc....it is not a place to say it is alright to go against what is best for you, what is moral and just, and how you are being raised by your parents. We even had one foster daughter that told a counselor at school that she was going to run away and marry her boyfriend with a fake ID as well as she was going to have a baby. The school did not notify us due to the childs right to privacy. When she did not show up from school, we searched everywhere, called the school and everything. The police came and there was a group of people searching for her. The search went on all night long and PH and I as well as her foster sisters, were so worried and could not imagine what had happened to her....you see, her boyfriend was very abusive and we feared that she was dead. A pastor called the police when our daughter got there with her boyfriend and let them know there was a child trying to get married...thank God she was alright, but, you see how far schools are going? It is not just here, it is everywhere. The school systems need to back off and let the parents be parents and the teachers be teachers.
November 3, 200718 yr I agree with you all. However, what is the answer for those parents that don't parent? I see it EVERY DAY, people. Do we just let those kids flounder?

This is terrible ---- I think schools need to leave the parenting to parents!
November 4, 200718 yr Something that really infuriates me about this is that if my child has to take any kind of medication, it has to happen at the Nurse's office, so I would have to sign the above mentioned permission slip. But by doing so, I give the Nurse's office carte blanche with the health and welfare of my child, including taking them out of state for an abortion or giving them birth control.
November 4, 200718 yr If a parent makes the choice, so be it. But for the school to make the choice to distribute it. Funny, that a school cannot lead a prayer because it is some bad thing but passing condoms out to everyone is a good thing. Wow, this country has gone down further than I had feared if this is the mentality that our society is adopting. Prayer in school -- BAD. Condoms in school -- GOOD. Amen!

What happened to good old fashioned common sense? Are parents so today so irresponsible that birth control is good but God is taboo????? Are our public schools so concerned about social responsibility that we have forgotton about moral responsibility?
