IMO Raceland had to play a turnover free game tro win it and did not, the Rams gave the ball back to the Devils on 4 turnovers and imo that was the difference.

 

On to West Carter for the Rams next week and then to host Fairview in the 1st round of the Class A playoffs.

Russell has next week off I believe and then host East C. in the first round of their playoff.

Congrats to Russell..I actually thought Raceland could pull this one off, but Russell prevailed. Congrats to the Devils.

Raceland battled the whole game. Turnovers and penalties killed them. Red Devils are very good defensively and took it to Raceland. I dont understand why Raceland tried running out of the shotgun formation. I dont remember 1 good run from that formation. Rams have no reason to hold their heads down, they were far from dominated by the bigger school.

I obviously wasn't there but from the way it was descibed on the radio I believe that the Raceland turnovers were the difference in the ball game. If I am remembering right two of them were very deep in our own territory and led to Russell scores within a couple of short plays. Russell broke a kickoff return for antoher TD. Raceland usually wins the battle of special teams and does not allow much on them. That was 3 TD's, two directly of turnovers in our own redzone and a special teams TD. Tie ball game w/o those.

Give Russell credit though, they made te plays and capitalized on mistakes.

 

Statmaster is correct in that Raceland has nothing to hang their heads over. Just get back to work on Monday.....correct the mistakes that cost us tonight and get ready for West carter.

Congratulations to Russell, they played hard and were strong defensively. Great game by the Red Devils. Russell play really fast to the ball on defense, Raceland has not seen a team this year with that much team speed on defense. Defense definitely won the game for Russell.

 

Raceland played a solid first half, but the penalties and turnovers were their demise in the second half. You can't start off first and fifteen four times and turn the ball over four times and win the big games, plain and simple.

The turnovers did hurt, but I think the point where the tide turned was the 4 or 5 false start calls that gave the Rams 1st and longs and 2nd and really longs. You can't successfully run your offense when you put yourself in those situations.

I would also like to give :thumb: to the WLGC radio crew, they did an excellent job of broadcasting the game.

 

They mentioned B. Denton and especially D. Terry all night on defense and J. Carver and Denton as well on offense often. They also complimented the Raceland school system/people involved with accomodating everyone and the facilities. A commment was made when they came on the air.........."Raceland has the place looking great and this is what h.s. football is supposed to be, not in some big stadium."

 

While I am throwing out compliments I would also like to make a special mention of Raceland - Worthington's/ Campbell Elementary principal Greg Dowdy.

Mr. Dowdy will be retiring next week from many years as principal of Campbell Elementary. He was an "honorary coach" tonight as a tribute to him. Although it has been years he was no stranger to a football field, Mr. Dowdy was a star RB at Ashland and was a member of the 67' Tomcat State Champion football team. He played under legendary coach Herb Conley and later Coached under him for the Tomcats. Just another one of several Raceland/Ashland connections :thumb:.

Thank you Mr. Greg Dowdy for your service and MANY contributions to the Raceland - Worthington School System, you have Definately Left Campbell Elementary and Raceland Schools betteer than what you found them. I believe that Campbell Elementary led the State in several catagories of education duiring his time there. Mr. Dowdy also spent several years in the Ashland School System.

A fine Christian man who will be missed greatly. Greg, you are a personal friend and best of wishes in your Retirement, you deserve it :thumb:.

Turnovers did hurt Raceland but they had chances and did not take advantage of them. They have to figure out how to throw the ball down the field some time and I would like to see them throw on first down sometime also.

Russell is a good team and they made the adjustments to take control and they did. Good game by the David Bailey(Russell) had 250 all purpose yards.

Was impressed with the Rams,just think Russell"s size was a little to much for them.Raceland should be very impressive in the playoffs where there more evenly matched in size.Wish the best of luck to Raceland.

First half was pretty even and a good ballgame. The second half Russell took control and never looked back.

 

Russell answered score for score in the first half so I would consider it a wash.

 

Seems like Raceland had an issue with movement that cost them several penalties but from the stats I heard after the game Russell was penalized more yardage.
