I think every game is a "needs" game. High School sports is all about pride and bragging rights, and after losing twice to Ryle last year I think finding motivation shouldn't be a problem, regardless of the lack of playoff implications.

 

Every game may be a 'need' game, but the 'need' is different depending on the situation. They don't 'need' to win these next two weeks, but they 'need' to work on some things offensively and defensively. I'm sure the boys will come out ready to play, but at this point in the season, the players and coaches know where they stand and what they 'need' to work on come November 9th.

 

And pride and bragging rights is only a very, very small part of high school sports.

I respectfully disagree with your last statement. High School athletes are judged between themselves based on what you've done, and whom you've beaten. I will agree that the next two games have no affect on the playoff status of Dixe's season, but teams should always go into every game viewing that game as the most important game of the season, because for those next 3 hours or so an entire years' worth of bragging rights are on the line, and don't think for one minute that is not important to those kids.

No. I think High School sports are about a lot of things. They teach you how to be a man (or woman), and have some accountability to your teammates, coaches, and fans. But one of the best things about these sports, specifically team sports, is working together with your teammates towards a common goal, and the satisfaction of achieving those goals. Now, goals for each team may differ from school to school, but I can tell you Friday night, the only team goal that Dixie will have is to beat Ryle, and if they achieve that goal, they will reap the benefits of working together as a team, which includes holding your head high whenever you are out for the next 12 months and you see a Ryle player in a letter jacket.

The key difference in this game is that Ryle NEEDS to win this game, Dixie doesn't. If Ryle wins out, they get the #2 seed in their district, and thus a home game in the playoffs. Dixie already has the #2 seed locked up, therefore, they can use this game to work on some things before CovCath comes down Dixie Hwy.

I can hear the Dixie staff in the locker room prior to the game letting their team know that a win really doesn't mean much and that they are only going to work on things in preparation for covcath! Also, they may want to play only the jv squad so no one gets hurt.

:thumb: Your previous posts led me to believe that bragging rights and pride were the only things high school sports were about. This post shows you mean otherwise, which is what I was trying to get at.

I guarantee you Dixie comes out motivated for this game, especially after losing two games to them last year. However, as a coaching staff, you know they're looking at this game differently this year than they did last year. It's a great opportunity to work on some things that you wouldn't necessarily work on in a district game, along with trying to build some depth at certain positions come playoff time.

Motivation is definatly not a problem for Dixie. Yes Ryle may have more of a reason to win then Dixie due to the playoffs, but a quick question, WHY WOULD DIXIE WANT TO LOSE ON SENIOR NIGHT? Point proven, Dixie has enough motivation to get the job done
