Never said pass interference was called. However once the illegal forward pass is called then in truth there is no pass interference as the second pass is technically a lateral and thereby does not warrant a PI call.

BD - I'm no ref (I just play one on BGP) but I think the term lateral is ONLY for a backwards pitch. I believe any forward throwing of the ball is considered a pass.

It would normally be pass interference, but on a play with multiple forward passes, there in no pass interference on the second pass, so the ball belongs to team B on the 20.

HINT!!! Remember the recent rule change about multiple forward passes during a down! That is key to right answer.

Ok, we've had some really good responses to this play but here's the ruling:

Legal contact by B1 and an illegal forward pass by A1. Pass interference restrictions for B players ended when the shovel pass was touched. B will likely decline the penalty and keep the ball. If the illegal forward pass is accepted, it is a 5 yd penalty and loss of down at the spot of the foul but A would retain the ball.

This is a new rule change. In previous years the ruling would be completely different. Previously you would have defensive pass interference but with the new change the ruling is different.

I like to see everyone's opinion on these plays. I really enjoyed trying to figure out the call on the TV segment.

No, the second pass is still a forward pass. It's just an illegal forward pass. Once the legal forward pass touches a player, pass interference restriction are gone. That is why there is no P.I. penalty but the second pass is still a forward pass and not a lateral.

"Technically a lateral." Again, the word lateral never appears in the high school rule book. I remind folks to be very careful of getting rules information on BGP. Most of the ones going on and on are not only technically wrong, but outright wrong.

I would have to say that A is penalized for an illegal forward pass. If B accepts the penalty it will be 5 yards from the spot of the foul and loss of down. If B declines the penalty you have a TD for B.

I led you astray. We'd both get boo-ed...

Forgot about the little fact that DPI can only occur on a legal forward pass. FBRULES will have me doing some additional rules study during detention for this one.

That's okay. You qualify to work the Wake Forest-Florida State game. Did any one see the two different ruling and then go to replay for a 12 minute delay.

What many are calling the 2nd pass is actually the 3rd pass. Shovel pass forward, lateral back, pass down the field.

I don't think the play gets called dead when the ball is thrown down field, even thought it is an illegal forward pass. However, the receiver is still an eligible receiver. Since the defender knocks down the receiver before intercepting the ball, the defender is called for pass interference. Penalties are offseting.

Had the defender NOT interferred with the receiver, the defending team would have to choose between taking the penalty against the offense or declining the penalty and getting the ball where the interception run back was stopped.

HHS... Sorry you are wrong.

You can only have pass interference on a legal forward pass.

The only foul on this play is illegal forward pass, 5 yards from the spot of the foul, and a loss of down.

You can have as many backward passes in a down as any team in possession of the ball wants. However, there can only be one legal forward pass during a down.

The second forward pass is illegal, no pass interference...they would decline the 5 yard loss of down penalty and take the ball at the 20
