How weird is it these two teams not hooking up this year? Even with Belfry's dominance of late, it would have been nice to see the series to continue.

Though we hit a cold streak vs. the Pirates, it's always been a fun series. While I'm sure Coach D. has his reasons for suspending the series, it does make the season feel like something's missing.

Agreed. The series had it's twists and turns....and both programs have had periods of dominance throughout. I still believe that Belfry and Prestonsburg were absolutely the best 2A teams in 2003 and 2004. Those were very special years....albeit a little "sweeter" for Belfry.....but P-burg, IMO, was the best team we played either year.....and could have defeated E-town or Owensboro Cath.

 

It's a shame the series came to an end. My guess is....in a few years....it'll get cranked up again.

Best atmosphere I EVER saw was when Prestonsburg came to Belfry in the 04' playoffs. It was electric and memorable.

Words can't describe how much I miss this series already, but I can count the dollars both schools are losing out on by not playing this one.:sssh:

It sure would have been nice for Belfry to play P-burg instead of East Carter......although belfry has taken a solid hold on the series the past few seasons, the Blackcats always forced Belfry to bring their A-game and every few years the Blackcats would field a team that could play with Belfry step for step, and sometimes beat them.

 

Alot of people forget that 2004 Blackcat squad was IMO the second best team in the state that year, and were only a couple plays away from beating that awesome Belfry team both games.

 

I think Derrossett just wanted some time away from the series, I think it will be back very soon.

The two schools played annually (at least) from '31-'41, '46-'77, '79-'94, then '99-'06. The longest gap without "the game" was 5 yrs..

Hate to see any rivalry game shut down; at least as long as the games are reasonably competitive. That's one reason why I wasn't thrilled about realignment - just when it looked like Mason County was getting entrenched in the "old 3A" and playing Ashland, Boyd, Greenup and JC every year, things changed. Not that there's anything wrong with rekindling the Mason-Russell rivalry; but I was just getting used to the former alignment.

 

Kentucky HS football needs games like Belfry-Prestonsburg.

I miss playin P-Burg... At least we could look forward to a good game... A big rivalry...Hopefully we will meet again soon...
