Cats get another football commitment

Featured Replies

He is currently a 2-star on Rivals and Scout...

However, this kid has big-time potential and I'm glad he picked the Cats...I expect him to move up to a 3-star before the final rankings are released.

From reading the article on him at TCP, it seems he is not lacking any confidence.

"I want to focus now on the rest of my season and leading my team to a state championship," he said. "Then I am going to come to Kentucky, and first, win a SEC championship. I saw where they hadn't won one in many years. After that comes a national championship."

Not to worry Deaunte...we're taking care of that this year...and maybe both...

2, on both scouts and rivals from what I can tell.

Looks like some other schools were interested in him, but I'm not sure who had actually offered...according to the article it mentioned several schools that wanted to wait and see how he did as a senior.

His schools of interest list were...UK, Alabama, Indiana, U of L, UNC, Tennessee and Vandy...

My gut feeling is that UK may have cashed in on their current success, the opening Woodson's departure will leave, and the wait-and-see approach from some more established programs to land a pretty good prospect. It sounds like his stock will likely rise after his senior season. I don't get the impression that he's a real polished, ready to go QB...I get the feeling that he could be more like Andre Woodson when he came to UK...a guy with some big time raw potential, that just needs some good coaching and the right attitude to bring it out.

Those are the type of players that UK needs to get and then develop if they want to sustain their current success...while there is no guarantee how he will develop, I think it's a good committment for the Cats. It seems that if it didn't work out at QB, he's probably a good enough athlete to contribute somewhere else. I certainly wouldn't expect him to walk in and take over for Woodson next season...it would be nice if he turns out to be that good, but realistically, I expect he has the potential to be a very good QB, but will need some time to develop.

I think this is a good pickup for the Cats, but I'm hoping we can make a bigger splash at some point.

You make some excellent points.

Andre Woodson made the Elite 11 quarterback camp in California before is senior year in high school. That means he was viewed as one of the best twelve quarterbacks going into his senior year. He did have big-time raw potential and played in a very simple, non-passing offense at North Hardin.

Deaunte Mason is a big, strong athlete, but in no way the quarterback prospect that Andre was out of high school.

I'm aware that Andre was a more hyped recruit, but he was still raw. That was the gist of my comparison...I think Mason could very well be a guy with big time potential, but it may take a couple of season's of learning and being a backup before he's ready to be under center in the SEC. Hopefully, Hartline or Pulley or someone will be ready to go and Mason can develop without being thrown to the wolves. Of course, I'm not expecting him to be a serious threat to start until 2009 at the earliest...maybe 2010.

A possible redshirt next year, then on the bench as a freshman...then we're looking at a 3rd year sophomore who may be ready to take the ball and run with it.

For some of you "older" UK fans out there, after watching Deaunte Mason on tape, he reminds me very much of a past Wildcat great at the quarterback position.......Derrick Ramsey.

Sounds to me like a free safety or Wr

Great pickup for Kentucky as I saw this young man play last year down in Nashville...didn't know the Cats were after him...but he runs like the wind and has nice arm and touch with throwing the football...will be interesting to see how he develops under Joker Phillips and Coach Sanders.

Who's that?

Randy Sanders, the QB coach.

Randy Sanders, the QB coach.

So edits get changed in quotes too? Grr... it was "Sanderson"

Funny how things work. I was just talking about Ramsey 10 minutes ago. I certainly hope he is a player like Ramsey.

So when it said Sanderson you had no idea what he meant?

It was a joke. Carry on.
