Alcohol dependence alters parts of the brain from its normal healthy state, this is called disease. There now exists indisputable evidence provided by brain imagery scans that show differences in the brains of people dependent on alcohol vs. people who are not.

So if it's a disease, can it be a disability?

The craving that an alcohol-dependent person feels for alcohol can be as strong as the need for food or water. An alcohol-dependent person will continue to drink despite serious family, health, or legal problems.

There are a lot of things that run in the family. Some of these things are not of the control of people....others are. I do have an uncle that gets a check for his drinking. I am not happy to post this, but it is so very true. He has been getting a check for 20 years....he has to take a test every so often to make sure he is still drinking so the checks will come in. In the event that he is clean during one of these tests, his check will stop. The tests are random and you do not get any notice. So, I ask, where is the benefit for him to stop drinking? One day sober could mess his "income" up....that is what he tells our family all the time. Then, you look at someone like PH....took us fighting...and I mean fighting....for about 3 or so years to finally get a disability check for him from the VA. He is still being turned down from the SS office. The reason is because he has not held a job for so many years ( I can not remember the time table that they give you....I think two years..) . Well, how about all the other years that he worked? My uncle never worked a day in his life...just uses the government...taxpayers money...to purchase more beer!!! It is an outrage!!!!

 

Oh boy...if anyone knows me, please don't think bad of me and turn me into the Mental Health Counseling Society for posting the above....I am supposed to fight for anyone's right for disability and those who drink, and can not stop, who have family members with this "disability", in my profession it is considered a disability. But, I do have a mind of my own, even though I am not supposed to!!! LOL LOL
