Their program had some success during Larry French's tenure (1979 to 1989 ?) and until Jaggars arrived French was the pinnacle of their history. I recall Mercer making it to the Class A semi-finals in '86 (?) and losing to eventual champ Heath. They had a good team in '88 that lost to Danville in a close playoff game.

 

Only 2 games really stood out to me in that old rivalry.

 

1987 Mercer beat Boyle 3-0 for the first time in 15 or more years. It was one of about 3 close losses the Rebels had in Ed Rall's last year as coach.

1977 Then #1 ranked Harrodsburg rode Gus Parks and Nicky Yeast to a 60-0 route over eventual District Champ Boyle. This one made the rivalry personal for Boyle.

Mercer's best shot in the 70's at Boyle was in 77, the week after Harrodsburg beat Boyle 60-0. That game was a little closer, like 21-0. I am 42 years old and the angriest I've ever seen my dad any where was on that bus after the game. He would not have been happy about missing the opportunity to beat Boyle to begin with. Then, after the game, one of his players did something that really was a mistake. I've heard stories about the following Monday's practice- bearcrawls across the width of the field, etc.

 

I am sure it will be a great atmosphere with all the old Rebels, Hogs, Dogs, and now even some former Titans at the game. I am sure alot of old stories will be told, and a few of them will be true.

I was freshman that year in '77 and it was the first time we got to dress with the varsity. We all had visions of playing in that Homecoming game and it was always too close for Rall to play us. (We had to wait until the next week against Casey County to get to play against a varsity team. Well, Casey team. :lol:)
