New KHSAA Proposals

Voting Results

Which again begs the question

Why would anyone be opposed to a stronger investagative KHSAA if the wrongdoing is as widespread as many say it is?

It is a real shame that the proposal for better enforcement didn't pass. I hope that those voting against it will stop griping about the lack of action from the KHSAA.

Won't happen.

We'll continue to hear how toothless the KHSAA is

How certain schools thumb their noses at the rules

How recruiting is ramampant

How everyone knows someone who was recruited by some athgletic powerhouse

Does anyone even pay any attention to the votes. It seems like I heard that they overwhelming voted for something about a year and a half ago that was ignored. Maybe they will do the same with these votes. Well it probably depends on who is not in agreement.

I'm sure that the KHSAA's BOC and the KBE pay attention to the votes and take the desires of the members into consideration. The vote taken a year and a half ago was not ignored; not one dang bit. It was carefully considered by several levels of review. At the end of the day, the BOC could not recommend adoption by the KBE because the BOC did not feel it was in the best interests of high school athletics. Neither did the KBE. But to say the vote was ignored is simply hyperbole; particularly when the outcome of the BOC vote was some thing like 9-7 (against adoption) with one abstention. Seems to me that if the vote was so close, the desires of the member schools were carefully considered.

I thought the vote was by those representing each school and their athletes? The BOC should remember who put them in their positions in the first place. Isn't this by a vote as well? Did anyone ever consider that maybe public schools just do not want to be involved with the privates? I have family in a state that the privates and publics do not compete and frankley the big game(s) in the state are the public championships.

That mentality and way of thinking is part of what's wrong with the KHSAA today. The schools believe that since they elect some (not all, but definitely a majority) of the BOC members that the BOC should do whatever a majority of the schools want. And when that doesn't happen, some school officials, not used to not getting their way as they run their own little fiefdoms, get really upset and start acting irrationally and vindictivelly. Unfortunately their and your belief that the BOC members should vote the way the members want them to is wrong. Even though some of the BOC members are elected by the schools, once elected, the BOC members are required by the constitution to vote only in accordance with what they think is in the best interest of high school athletics. They are not to act as a rubber stamp for the delegates vote. If that was the intent, there would be no reason for the BOC to have any input on the proposals adopted by the delegates, now would there? Rather, it would go straight from the delegates to the KBE if the BOC was supposed to simply vote the way the delegates voted.

Finally, there is nothing and I mean nothing stopping those public schools that don't want to play the private schools from dropping out of the KHSAA and starting their own association. As the publics like to point out when it works to their advantage, the KHSAA is a voluntary association. Nothing is forcing the publics that don't want to play the privates from staying in such a voluntary association. As they like to say, the disgruntled public schools knew the rules (i.e. having to play the privates, the privates can accept kids from several counties, etc with all the other things that the privates do that upset the publics but are within the existing rules) when they decided this year to rejoin the Association. No one was sticking a gun to their heads forcing them to rejoin. If they didn't like the existing rules, don't rejoin:thumb:

The privates aren't going to be forced out of the KHSAA, try as some might to make it happen. It isn't going to happen. The supporters of the split would be better off using their time to set up a new association for those schools that think playing against the privates is unfair. It would be real interesting to see how many schools join.

Unfortunately, for you and others who feel like the BOC should simply be a rubber stamp for the school vote, that just won't work. It isn't allowed by state regulations. The BOC has a different role. Their role is to CONSIDER what the schools want, and weigh that up against what the legislature and State Board of Education want. Frankly, it is those two entities that empower the BOC to make decisions. The schools get to select who they want to act on the wishes of the legislature and State Board. An unenviable position to say the least. But not a rubber stamp. And not supposed to be.

And in these particular issues, that type of check and balance is critical due to the disproportionate number of public school members. The mentality of the herd with momentum must be kept in check by the duly authorized group of board members as they must act on behalf of the entire state, not simply one group of schools.

I wish I'd have stated it so well. Agree with your sentiments 100%.
