Dayton 20 Lynn Camp 13

Featured Replies

Bad injuries or just banged up injuries? I wish I could have made this one. Sounds like everyone was leaving what they had on the field. This apparently was the game it was supposed to be....

Cramps and just beat up injuries I believe. The uniforms of the RBs for Lynn Camp looked almost grey instead of white from the sweat, dirt, grass, and the pounding they took and gave. I believe Lynn Camp even lost the starting QB on the final drive at about the 25 yard line.

Lynn Camp converted a 4th and 5 earlier in the drive getting to the 15 and making the first down by about 2 inches.

Just an exciting final drive with no timeouts, injuries, first downs by inches, and a final stop.

I actually made the short jaunt over to Davis Stadium to watch this game and although I will say that BOTH teams played really hard....it was a few bad calls going against Lynn Camp AND the poor sportsmanship from the Dayton band that ruined in for me.

As for the bad calls, I don't think I've ever seen refs give such bad spots consistently for one team. In the first half, Lynn Camp should have easily converted a 2nd & 1 but the spot was wrong by about a yard or two....same on the third down play and 4th down play as well.

On the final drive of the game, with the ball inside the 10 yard line, Lynn Camp called a running play to the outside and from my vantage point it looked like the runner should have scored BUT the whistle blew and the ref said the forward progrss was stopped...LC had to spike the ball to stop the clock.....THEN on fourth down, a short pass play was called and it looked like the ball carrier easily broke the plain of the ball after the pylon was knocked down but he was called down.

As far as the band is concerned, yes they should be playing from time to time BUT playing while the visiting team has the ball and not when your team has the ball is kind of bush league to me.....PLUS when a player goes down to injury, it should be common knowledge to stop playing at that point.

Well enough of my ranting....it was a hard fought game that will be marred by some calls for the Lynn Camp fans.

I will also like to say that the Dayton defense did a marvelous job at containing Joe Roskopf. They did something that I didn't know if they could do. Congrats on that!!!

I got that. My point deals with scheduling teams that you have no rivalry with that are hours away when you've got so many local teams that you can play , get fans to, and get home at a decent time.

You don't want your first real road trip to be a playoff game, do you?

Way to Devils. Keep rolling...

Statman,

I tend to agree with you about the band playing as loud as possible when the opposition has the ball, but then I don't really care about bands and they are rarely at actual games anymore.

As for the final spot I was right there literally and at least that one was accurate. The ball never crossed the goal line.

It is not that I don't love the band, but you can't blame or credit a win or loss by the band. By the 4th every down had an injured player ( especially with no time outs left).

If you were right there and say that it wasn't good, then I totally take your word on it. That's all I need to hear. I trust you on that.

As far as the band, I was never saying that they were what caused the Wildcats to lose. I was stating that once a player goes down, you don't need to play until the next dead ball.

Obviously that was your first Dayton game. We've been complaining to Coach Lickert for 3 years about the band playing when Dayton has the ball, now Coach Deaton has to deal with it. There's zero rhyme or reason to when they play. It's nothing done on purpose, I can guarantee that. Normally they're playing when Dayton has the ball on the other teams 10...

Good job Dayton!

Well it wasn't my first Dayton game (that was in '65) and the band was frantically playing as loud and as constantly as they could as Lynn Camp was driving and by direction of the head band dude.

Not that I care because I look at it as bands are just like fans with noisemakers, or milk jugs, or loud voices except they have.........um instruments which make them louder and more noticable.

Actually I think the fans of both teams would have preferred to have them not playing, so they could cheer and hear each other.

That's why I didn't quote you...;)

I'm telling you what's gone on for the last 3 years. It never failed that they were playing when Dayton had the ball. Maybe that's changed but there's no doubt that that is what happened the last three years...

Maybe along with a Secondary coach, a QB Coach, a Strength coach, they need a Band coach.;)

Sounds like you're volunteering...:ylsuper:

On a side note, I'll never forget when the Dayton/NCC game was called before halftime last year because of a thunderstorm. Both teams, coaching staff's and cheerleaders left the field to seek shelter. A minute later the metal toting band members were out on the field getting ready to play. The AD had to turn them away....

When the Beechwood / Dayton game nearly turned into a riot because of crowd problems a few years back the refs sent both teams off the sidelines and to the opposite endzones while the police did their work. The band took the field and started playing the "Eye of the Tiger" song from the Rocky movies. The refs weren't happy.:sssh:

It seemed as if they were using it at a time out, if not on purpose it was for sure a plus for Lynn Camp. I also noticed the ref getting on Lynn Camp because the QB walked all the way to the side line which is a no no, surprised there was no penalty. Dayton had many mistake, but Lynn Camp wasn't able to take advantage much, thanks to that Devil D. :ylsuper:
