He's a very good quarterback for that system. I can't say that an outstanding QB from another D-1 college could come into Hawaii and do what Colt does, but I think he would be merely mediocre at another D-1 school.

 

Do you think UK or Louisville would struggle if Colt Brennan stepped into their starting lineup? I think they would both still be really good teams.

I think he's pretty good, but I think it's mostly the system. I don't think his #'s would be nearly as good anywhere else.

They wouldn't struggle, but they may not be as good. Colt Brennan would not be on the Heisman contender list if he played at UK or UofL. I would take Brohm 10/10 times over Brennan at UofL. It is just a different style and it is right for that offense.

Often QB's get labeled great, super or average and many times, the system along with the supporting cast is the difference.

 

I recall Couch, running the "I" at UK but all would agree, not the best system. Hawaii has a throw first and then, throw some more philosophy and will lead to gaudy numbers. With that said, finding a QB with a strong arm, ability to read defenses, audible and execute that system, is extremely difficult.

 

Like many have said, combination of both but still boils down to ability...which he seems to have.

I think it's the QB. Hawaii runs an offense that favors a passing QB, but no one else in that same offense has put up Brennin's #'s.

Both IMO. Jones is one of the best passing coaches in history!

Numbers don't really mean anything if you can't win your games when they matter. Hawaii is a decent team but I don't think they have the ability to truly compete with the big dogs therefore I don't think their system is that great. It works for their conference but not in the big picture of things.

Defense is the reason Hawaii isn't a big dog.

Same for Texas Tech.

Defense wins championships.

The offensive systems are as good as it gets.

In the last 2 seasons, they have played 4 teams that I would consider to be big dogs and their offense didn't ever put up more than 24. How is that as good as it gets?

Texas Tech has more overall talent than Hawaii and the have beaten Oklahoma and Texas in the last couple of years. Thats as good as it gets. Defense and turnovers lead to bad field position for an offense, give Hawaii USC type defense and 24 might win a few.

Then why is it that none of the powerhouses use the pass now and pass later type of offense?

App st beats Michigan with spread. The 3 back offense is dead everywhere but Navy. Spread offenses and passing gurus like Urban Meyer are the rage all over the country.

What are you talking about now? Like I said before, none of the big dogs have a system like Hawaii. You have to be balanced to be a contender.
