Did you see how the game ended? With Elder leading in OT, Elder got an INT to secure the game. However, the kid who picked it got excited and simply pitched it on the ground ie he fumbled it. Fortunately, all of his teammates ran right for the ball and recovered it.

 

Unless the refs automatically blow the ball dead in this situation, it could have been a real Merkle (baseball historians know this term) that could have cost Elder.

I'll have to guess about the rationale, but it's consistent with a try (PAT). A change of possession on either a try or in overtime makes the ball dead by rule in highschool.

 

In college, the defense can recover (or intercept) and return a live ball for 2 points on a try.

Actually it has more to do with how OT is run in high school. Elder was on offense first and scored 7. If Independence does not equal Elder's score the game is over. Alternating possession is the OT format. Once Independence lost possession, the game is over.

 

If Independence was on offense first and turned it over, Elder would immediately go on offense at the 20. Once the defense gains possession in OT, the play is dead.
