If Independence was on offense first and turned it over, Elder would immediately go on offense at the 20. Once the defense gains possession in OT, the play is dead.

I still don't understand the logic of stopping the play. It seems "anti-football."

Why not give the defense a chance to win the game on an interception/fumble return? Why simply stop the game in mid play?

Good question; some rules are head scratchers. Like why can't a returner run a kick out of the endzone?

 

Officials don't actually write the rules. The national coaches association and state high school athletic associations (the NFHS) write them. We just enforce what they come up with.

It is in Kentucky. They start at the 20 in Ohio.
