Any guitar players out there?

Featured Replies

I started playing about 4 months ago and I'd say i'm pretty advanced for having only played for 4 months. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for places to look for tabs (preferabally free) or instructional websites or tips and tricks or magazines or any really good songs to look for. I'll take anything you throw at me. I mainly play acoustic (because that's all i have access to) so any acoustic specific stuff would be extra awesome.

I started playing about eight months ago. Run to State and I get together every Saturday to practice. He's been playing for a couple years.

The first thing I would do is go to Justin Sandercoe's site. This guy is a phenomenal teacher! He's probably the most popular guitar guru on YouTube. But he has his own site as well. Here's a link:

Here are some more links I think you'll find useful:

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

http://www.totalvid.com/Beginner/1

http://www.rockhousemethod.com/home.aspx

I would advise you to learn the musical theory as soon as you can. Don't just memorize songs. It will make you much better in the long run. I taught myself how to play through tabs, but if someone asked me to play an Am Pentatonic scale I couldn't, so I have to go back and learn all the stuff I should have learned in the beginning.

Yeah Justin is the man. I've learned more from him than I did in some private lessons. And he's free! I'll check out the other sites though. Do you have any other basic advice for me?

I love messin' around with scales! And there are some good scale books out there. I mostly just stick with my favorite - the G major scale. :D

As for musical theory, it isn't 100% necessary; but it will make you a true musician, and give you the ability to improvise with other musicians. But it's really hard! :irked:

A know a couple scales, but not the names. What recources should I use to learn that?

The best site used to be OLGA (On Line Guitar Archive). However, I believe that their site has been taken down due to legal troubles.

A lot of really good sites have been shut down, or removed themselves to avoid legal troubles. It's really a bad deal.

I have seen some lessons for some songs on you tube...

Here are some more sites you may find useful, Italian Stallion.

BTW, technically I haven't been playing for a couple of years. I played around on and off for a bout a year or so about 15 years ago but didn't take it serious and didn't learn jack. Since the beginning of this year I've been seriously trying to learn and I'm loving it. It's been a blast working on songs together with BF on Saturdays and we've both learned a lot.

Practice at least an hour every day if you can, and as BF posted, the Gig-Bag Book of Scales is an excellent one.

Thanks a lot. I love love love playing guitar. When I'm not at school or doing homework its what I do. I don't have the coordination to sing and play at the same time, but because I practice so much I'm picking everything up pretty fast. Any recommendations on good classic rock songs? Or any songs for that matter?

Wish You Were Here is a great tune to play.

Also, I really recommend you learn Travis Picking.

Songs like Dust in the Wind are played with this style. Here's the main riff.

I love Travis! And I'm not ashamed to admit it! ;)

Learn to listen!!! Practice all you can. I agree ..learn theory..it makes things much more enjoyable and YES..it is hard to learn...but not impossible...and get hold of some accoustic Greg Lake music..then explore alternate tunings (Duane Allman,Jimmy Page and Adrian Legg would be good starts here)...but most of all...enjoy it!!!
