Pete Rose keeps it classy. Or not. Probably not.

Pete Rose may be the hit king, but he was no hit with some kids and parents at the U.S. Army Reds Legends Baseball Camp last week. The man whose name symbolizes the best years of the Reds was the worst speaker on a great program - no contest.

"It was a complete embarrassment," said Staff Sgt. Steven Tischer, commander of the Colerain-Highland Ridge U.S. Army Recruiting Station that sponsored the baseball camp for 7- to 14-year-olds. "You don't swear in front of kids, that's just common sense. He dropped the F-bomb and the S-bomb. He told them winning is everything and if you get second place you're just losers."

I asked Tischer about Rose's July 26 visit after getting an e-mail from Renee Collins of Mason, who went to the camp with her son and some of his teammates.

"It was such a great week," she said. "My son goes to camps a lot and this was by far the best. It was so wonderful except for that one hour."

She said Rose's talk was "weird" - something that "might have been appropriate for a Kiwanis Club, but not for kids."

Doesn't surprise me.

Unfortunate as it could have capped a great experience for the kids.

Why would anyone expect Pete Rose to be classy?

Besides, does he have any appeal to kids? Most of them, outside of the Cincinnati area, have probably never heard of him.

Its just Pete being Pete, he is not the best communicator.

Long live the Hit King!!!

Long live the Hit King!!!

It's more than that. It's just Pete being stupid. How anyone can think it is ok to say those things to 8 year olds. They have to have something wrong with them mentally are they are just really stupid.

Long live the Hit King!!!

That is why he gets away with doing things like this because he is the "hit king".

I always admired and idolized Pete as a kid but now he just reminds you of a sour old man. I hate to say that. As a baseball player alone and for what he accomplished "on the field" and I still respect that. Gambling disgraced his reputation and was a bad mark on baseball but imo gambling did not help him get More Base Hits Than Anyone To Ever Play The Game. That fact I still respect!

Pete is an Arrogant Class A Jerk but like I said .....I respect the fact of more base hits than anyone to ever play the game of baseball and Drug / Steroid Free while doing it. (at least I never heard his name in on being associated with that)

I am a huge Rose fan....but why did the Army pick Rose to give a speech about doing right in life. Everyone knows his scandals off the field, I say its the Army's fault for having him speak. Do some research on how he speaks and the way he speaks before you have him speak to youngsters. He is who he is and he ain't going to change.

I understand what you are saying but you can't blame the army for this one. Pete was talking to kids and should have watched what he said.

I have to agree with you on this one. The Army does have to be questioned but Rose could had controlled what he said to kids.

I can't help it, I will always like Pete Rose for how he played the game and his accomplishments. Although I can't condone his actions with the gambling and I don't agree with that.

I agree with your statement. Rose again shows his true colors.
