Cawood question?

Featured Replies

HDE -----How many district titles did Cullivan win at Cawood?

Since it was after my time i am a little confused. Who made up the Cawood district in the 80's.

Cawood won the district in 75, 76 and 77 under Boyd Fox and won the region in 75.

Cawood won several sub-district titles, but the only district title under Cullivan was in 1982. Cawood beat Lincoln County for the district championship and lost to Highlands in the regional finals. Cawood lost to Danville in the district finals in 84, 85 and 86 after winning sub-district titles. The sub-districts included Bell and Rockcastle and maybe Whitley and Knox Central.

wow it seems that most of the success of the trojans was in the 70s, now that makes me feel even better about my feeling that the Boyd Fox teams were as good or maybe just a bit better than the Cullivan era. imho!

Cawood had some very good teams in the 80's as well.

Yeah i agree don't be mislead. Cawood was as good as anybody around these parts for much of the 80's. After you have been out of the loop and you forget about all those districts and sub districts and so forth -- it is easy to look back and say because so and so didn't win a district they must not have been as good. It has been so long ago and the playoffs have changed so much i really can't remember exaclty how all that sub- district stuff worked.

If i am not mistaken didn't Cawood go undefeated around 85 or 86 and they didn't even win the district. I could be wrong about that the older i get seems like most of the years run together. If i am correct on my thinking i believe Middlesboro, Corbin and Cawood were about as good as it got around here.

Cawood was undefeated in the regular season in 1981 and 1985. The Cawood teams in the mid 80s were tremendous, but I don't think many teams would win a district title if you have to beat Danville to do it.

The Trojans had some unreal talent in the mid 70s, but they were more consistent in the 80s, with winning teams every year but one, I think, and playoff teams in eight of 10 years, I think, when they had to beat Bell and Rockcastle just to get to the playoffs.

I was not trying to disrespect any team of the Cullivan they were some really fine teams and they had some great talent, but being from the prior decade I feel that it is my duty to be somewhat biased. The eighties for Harlan co. as whole was imo the best football since the Lynch -Harlan wars of the 50s and 60s.

No dis taken big guy. See how nice everyone is when puff isn't around

lol

As an '86 graduate, I appreciate the props MP10. As someone who faced (and lost) to a great Cawood team and the Senior Freddie Maggard Cumberland team (state runner-up I think), I would agree that both were tremendous.

A testament to the talent on some of those 80's teams, I believe it was either 85 or 86 when they beat eventual 4a state champion Lex. Lafayette.

For the record, I graduated in 87 (it all seems cloudy now 20 years later), but the fall of 86 was my senior football season. Cawood had Hensley, Henson, Shackleford, Burke, etc., and Cumberland had Maggard, Evans, Washington, etc. There seemed to be athletes galore county-wide.

Now you've hurt my feelings:cry:

...Which raises the question: Where has all of the talent gone? I'm not saying there hasn't been/isn't talent, but it seems like Harlan hasn't seen talent like this in a long time.

Not alot of talent in SE Ky, especially the County schools. It has to be developed much like Bell, Rockcastle, and Johnson do year in and year out.

What's interesting is that it seems like Cawood was always just on the cusp of making a splash. They have participated in the postseason 25 times and only have 4 wins to show for it:

-1975: Belfry, 27-0

-1982: Lincoln County, 28-6

-1992: Leslie County, 14-7

-1993: Belfry, 35-13

When you look at who they have lost to in previous years during the postseason, you can see why they have struggled. On eight different occasions they have lost to the eventual state champion:

-1975: Highlands

-1982: Highlands

-1984: Danville

-1987: Covington Catholic

-1988: Covington Catholic

-1989: Highlands

-2003: Belfry

-2004: Belfry
