"The Skies Have Opened Up"

Featured Replies

I've always had a problem with this saying. Now, I know someone is going to come on and give a reasonable explanation of what this quote truly means...or BF will Google it. But, there's very little chance of anyone changing my mind that this is incorrect...

If the skies truly 'opened up', wouldn't the sky be blue? If 'open' means open than wouldn't all obstructions be removed? I mean, if the sky closes, certainly we'd see clouds...no?

I know, this is normally a TD random thought...:scared:

In a very literal sense, if the skies "opened up" to where there was no obstruction, then that would mean the removal of the atmosphere! No blue sky then!

That would be closer than when it "opens up" and freaking pours...

Try this on for size.

What are clouds? The accumulation of moisture in the atmosphere, right?

What is rain? The release of that moisture, thus, in a gradual, small way, reducing the size of said cloud.

So as rain falls, it dumps moisture from the clouds to earth, and reduces the clouds, it would as you say, remove the obstructions (gradually). And thereby, open up the sky. So a downpour is the process of the sky opening up.

Problem is the clouds move on past us usually before we see the whole thing play out and get to witness the dissipation of the clouds.

Is that in the ballpark?

Whatever...

Whatever...

Nice response. :irked:

You asked for someone to try and convince you. I thought I made a pretty good case. Geez, you could at least try and acknowledge the effort. :p

What's your take, Sticky, on 'raining cat's and dogs'?

Very nicely done. I was just refusing to acknowledge the validity of your theory...:D

You know how they say that 'whatever' is another way of saying 'you win'? Well, there you have it...:irked:

Truly devastating to my case...

You ARE the Googlemeister...no?

It hurts and the cats always come out better than the dogs...

But the dogs make bigger poodles.

You ARE the Googlemeister...no?

So I've been told.

Although some refer to it as "pseudo-intellectual cheater."
