Has anyone seen the O'Conner kid at Scott this summer? Heard he is about 6'5" now and has some pretty good genes. If he develops anywhere near to dads level he could contribute in Taylor Mill real quick.

Will be a soph this year. Have heard that Scott has O'Conner and a good frosh guard to add to their junior class. If O'Conner can develop into a legit big man that would be a huge boost as Scott's JV team was pretty competitive last season. See if they can make the jump to the varsity level.

Scott lost a ton of talent from last year's varsity team and this coming year they will struggle to get 10 victories.

 

I did hear good things about O'Conner. His father Brian was a very good player back in his day.

I agree, I saw them play this summer and they did not look too good. I realize that it was "just summer ball" but they did lose a lot last year.

 

The o'conner kid has potential but he is going to have to put on some weight and muscle before he will be effective at the varsity level.

 

The incoming freshman I believe a previous poster was speaking about is a point guard I think. He has potential to contribute at the jv level. He's a little small but he is a very good player.

Now that the first round of summer ball is over does there appear to be any underclassmen that might be making an impact on the varsity level this season?

 

Last year we had Boone Co. frosh class with a lot of hype and they appeared to live up to those expectations.

Yes, last year's freshman were very talented, but really only went five deep. I saw this year's freshman class play in a few league games in June and they looked great. They are very deep with one of the best freshman post players in the area in Brown and one of the best all-around player and outstanding shooter in Montgomery. Add Bradley, Barnes, Moore, Oppenheimer, Fookes and Smith and a couple 6 footers in Crabtree and another player (sorry don't know his name) and you have a very talented group. Boone will be very good for the next few years.

I have seen Gabbard from Boone play this summer and he looks outstanding. He will be a huge impact as the starting point guard on the varsity team this year. He is a real quick point guard with excellent handles and court vision and has the ability to score.

Boone is deep at that position, arguably having the 2 best point guards in N KY in the 2010 class (Gabbard and Popp). There's very little difference between them skillwise and statistically, and they should both get lots of playing time at the varsity level this year as they did this summer. Both also currently start together on the same AAU team and have played together in the past. Both handle the ball well, with Gabbard having perhaps a slightly better handle. Both have very good court vision, and both can score, with Popp having perhaps a slightly better shot. When in the game at the same time, they are hard to guard and press and can break down the defense even better to get open shots for teammates when playing together. These two boys seem to get along well, and it will ensure that Boone will always have at least one adept PG on the floor at all times. I think that Boone will often be able to play a multiple guard offense, however, and push tempo and get lots of open shots because of this. IMHO, It would be a waste of talent not to.

 

With these guards and good shooters/scorers, such as Flannery, Boone should be good.

Lampl is OK and fills his role well. Wellbrock can't fill that role.

 

Wellbrock is aggressive, Lampl stands and watches. As a Junior he didn't start on the JV Team and CCH's post presence has lacked the past few years. Wellbrock is the only physical post they have that will mix it up with Maley and Grimes.

Boones class of 2010 is a little better than 5 deep and nothing against the class of 2011 at Boone but it's going to be a few years before any of them see a lot of significant minutes because of the strength of the class at 2010.

 

Maybe the post players can add a little depth down the road but the soph class is loaded with guards and shooters/scorers.

 

Boone Co has a chance to make a nice run over the next couple of years but it will be based on the strength of this years sophomore class.

Maybe you saw more games than I did but Lampl started and played many minutes in every game I saw. Wellbrock's hustle is obvious. I just don't think he's ready to play the 5.

Agreed :thumb: The 2009 class has a few good ones as well. McFarland is also very good and provides some additional needed heighth for Boone. Brown is a strong inside player who plays hard, and Spaulding is another athletic 2 guard who plays hard and whose shot is improving. Brown's older brother, who is a senior this year, also plays hard inside. Krohman, another senior, is another good 3 point shooter. With one more backup big man, Boone could have the complete package. I think they will be able to play 8 to 10 in a lot of games this year without losing much in the lineup at any time, and this will help wear opponents down. I believe a strong team needs a strong starting 5 and 2 or 3 good bench players. It will also be up to the coaches to utilize this talent the right way. I believe Boone could be better this year than last year's 18-12 record, and even better the following two years. Next year could be their biggest year. If another decent big man comes in, the sky's the limit.
