June 3, 200719 yr I hope they get Grant he seems to be what they need. We need another rivalry now that Billy D is gone. Tenn., Vandy and Fla. are still on our list to get this year.
June 3, 200719 yr Not according to Rick. He said on Dan Patrick's radio show a few months ago that he told Foley at the time that if he hired Billy he would have one of the virghtest up and coming stars in the ranks in a few years. This is the link from the day the show aired, someone else heard it too... http://www.bluegrasspreps.com/showthread.php?t=119423&highlight=dan+patrick He said on the show he called Foley or talked to him and convinced him to offer Billy and that is why...And he thought then UK should do the same thing for Pelphry or Ford (at UK) for the same reason... Revisionist history on Rick's part. It was well known he adivsed against it, partly die to the school being a "football" school. Story has changed...unless Billy siad he was going to go no matter what Pitino thought and then Pitino called Foley to help BD out....but he did not think it was a good fit.
June 3, 200719 yr I think Grant is a quick and easy hire for UF. The best hire? Maybe not. Hard to fault them if that is the case. He will be cheaper than making a run at Jay Wright. Could he be a Stan Heath? That would be a concern. Heath took talent from Gary Waters's Kent team, and in one year and rolled them to what the Elite 8? Grant did the same with Jeff Capel's team...which was pretty good to begin with. Grant is highly thought of in certain circles. He spent a lot of time at Florida and has some relationships with some of the current players. The key with him will be recruiting. Can he hang onto the talent in Florida. Obviously, with Donovan gone, the shine is off Florida to an extent and now opens the Sunshine State to get raided, by other programs.
June 3, 200719 yr A. How did that work out for Guttridge? Doherty? B. Fair point but I'm not sure if you can equate college basketball and the NFL. Doherty recruited the team that won Roy a national championship that he's longed for. Guthridge wasn't considered a young up and coming coach.
