Why?

I think even a better question is why is he not the best? He has one of the highest winning percentages over the last 10 years of all coaches in the state with 2 state championships to go along with it. Makes pretty good stats in my book.

It is hard to argue against Riley @ Warren Central.

Billy Hicks is in the top 5, although I'm not personally a fan of his.

Why?

5 final 4's in last 10 years.

Most Sweet 16 wins in last 10 years

Most career wins among active coaches

Plays state's top schedule every year.

Also was a winner at Evarts, Harlan, and Corbin

A few of rojas4's criteria eliminates some options....

I like the criteria sited by Rojas4...might want to add a really good coach wins the ones their suppose to, doesn't have a lot of upset loses. Another critieria is that they win with 'their' players.. develop their own, so many live off of move in players.

Rick Mays from Elliott Co. is considered the "Dean" of the 16th Region

Only because he has coached for years at a school that until recently had very low expectations. I would not mention his name with these others. He has 3 district championships in 20 some odd years at Elliott Co, and 2 of those were the last 2 years. There are better coaches in the 62nd district alone.

Hicks

Riley

Mabrey

Hatcher

Forrest

Everyone that has been named, other than JD Strange and John D. Wilson, are at big schools that have a lot of talent. There are 50 guys who are head coaches that could do what Hicks and the rest have done with the talent that the big boys coach.

Bottom line=talent wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever watched an 11th region game? To go the entire year without losing to an in-state school says a lot. Not many can do that. How about win your region 6 times in a row? I don't care the talent, everyone gets upset at some point. Not Riley. How many times has PRP won a Louisville region? Enough said. The talent at Graves has been minimal in comparison with the rest of the state. Were you at Rupp Arena in '97 to watch them play Eastern? Shouldn't have been on same floor, shows his level of coaching. And it will continue at PCC. Forrest might be the most underrated. Def. had Hicks' number for a few years, and that is with "all that talent". How did he take Oldham to Rupp this year? They couldn't even beat the 11th region's 10th best team in Western Hills.

Could not have said it better hoopsrbest. You need to look at guys that win year in and year out who are in the hunt despite not having the talent of the quote unquote "big schools". Lots of great coaches in this state.

So I guess these guys never won before they got to the "big schools"?

I think if you look at Coach Hicks he has won at Evarts, Harlan, Corbin, and Scott County. That is 4 schools of different size. He has done great at every level, winning the "All A" at Harlan, going to the Sweet 16 at Corbin and so on. He is proven at every level. Another great coach mentioned from a smaller school is Billy Mike Runyon.

Here is the thing. There are so many big high schools full of athletes like Scott Co, Warren Central, and a few others, but they arent near as successful because they simply are not coached as well.

When Hicks won his first state championship how many high profile players at the time where on that team other than Rick Jones who was a Junior? SC wasn't even ranked in the top ten that year. Out of the three senior starters none went on to play college basketball. Hicks is a proven winner because he puts non stop time and effort into what he does. Hicks could win at any high school in the state, if you look at his record he has won every where he has been, not just with talent loaded Scott County teams. Last thing couldnt stand to have a post about top Kentucky High School Basketball coaches with out mentioning Bobby Keith!

Billy Hicks didn't coach Harlan in the All A Classic ... Mike Jones did.

I haven't seen many teams in the state with the talent that Scott County had this season. No one denies that coaching plays a role in their success, but it has as much to do with talent as anything else.

But Scott County also had two juniors that played Division I basketball in Jones and A.W. Hamilton. The next season, Scott had three future D-I players (Scott Hundley was the second Mr. Basketball transfer) and didn't win the state title.

It wasn't as if those teams were lacking talent.
