Immigration policy

Is there only one "American way of life"?

The illegal immigrants that I have met have been good people. They work and support their families and are pleasant to be around. I even know of some that tried to go to our courthouse and pay taxes, but were denied.

There are major problems with immigration that needs to be solved. But I don't believe in turning my back on people that need my help.

You given any thought as to how unfair it is to legals that went about things the right way?

I have various ties to both sides of the equation. I have seen some of these issues first hand. I am sure that you have a point that I am not thinking of, so since you singled me out, lay it on me.

This country is not a theocracy. While the Bible may have guided us in the writing of our laws, the Bible is NOT the law of the land.

Just trying to get the Christian take on the immigration issue.

There are some Christians, around the world, who would say that "migration is a human right."

i saw a great video on it tonight at church - dealing with the African refugee problem in morocco. We know now from whence they come

BUT it is the foundation for many, many of the voters in this country and drives their decision making.

Immigration is a human right, if done through the proper channels.

If these illegals are so great, why don't they just take the time to come over here the right way?

It is my understanding, and I may be way wrong, that part of the issue is that it cost like 1500.00 per. If you are fleeing economic oppression then you don't have 1500.00 for each person in your family.

somebody please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

What does the right way consist of? How do they apply? What criteria do they have to meet? How much does it cost?

So because they're poor it gives them a free pass to break the law?

So because they're poor it gives them a free pass to break the law?

If I have the choice of dying in poverty in central america or breaking the laws of the U.S. so that my family can survive, there is no question what the morally right thing to do is.

Only when people point out the shallow, short sightedness of laws can we change them. Again I go back to Rosa Parks, had she not violated the law we might still be living in a Jim Crow society. If everyone is always compliant, the law will never change. Gandhi went to prison to show that the west had lost "all moral backing" (those are not the exact words, but pretty dang close), for its unjust laws in India. He was not compliant he was defiant - eventlually the west changed its ruling ways.

Have you seen "Les Miserables" - Jean van Jean (sp) stole to feed his family - he went to prison for it, but he did the morally right thing. That is the whole story here. What is moral thing for a "Christian Nation" to do? That is why I started this thread with the scripture.

Ace, unfortunately too many people just want to pay lip service to morality and don't want to actually do what is morally right. They don't want Mexicans here because they are poor and don't know English and that might mess up the picture that they have planned out for their life. Heaven forbid (no pun intended) that we actually look at them as humans and try to put ourselves in their position.

We are lucky that we are born into this country and that we have so many freedoms and opportunities. What would our lives be like if we were, instead, born poor in Mexico? Would we want a better life for our family? What would we do to get that life?

So you guys that are all for illegal immigration...you support the fact that they don't pay taxes?....support the fact that they take jobs from legal immigrants and American citizens?

If you want to allow illegal immigration, fine, but treat them the same way, make them pay taxes, etc....

In my part of the world, they do the jobs that Americans in this part of the world don't want to do anymore. The farmers I have talked to PREFER to hire the immigrants because they are MORE dependable, work HARDER and have LESS attitude.

It used to be that the tobacco fields and farms were littered with teenage males working to earn money. Now you would have to FORCE them out there.

I agree they should be paying taxes. But you know my dad worked many, many hours UNDER THE TABLE for extra money. I have done it in my younger days. They are not much different than many of us who have worked under the table.

You said you don't believe in turning your back on people that need your help, but arent you doing just that to those that came to this country the correct way and put their time in to become a legal citizen?

A lot of them do pay taxes, especially sales taxes, and many have a fake SS card so they pay into that system and will never benefit, thereby HELPING with the mess that we have created.

I again, don't think anyone is advocated, illegal immigration - what I see is that many believe is that the current policies are wrong, and have been pointed out by those who choose to break the law, and that we, as good Christian people, ought to work to remedy the problem.

Again, with illegal immigration we have a shrinking population and will run short of workers at some point. The baby boomers children are not have many babies.
