HammerTime Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 admit prior marijuana use in college. Can a mod fix that to Gaines.
HammerTime Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft07/news/story?id=2842833 Three players widely regarded as top-10 picks in the NFL draft, including Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, have admitted to previously using marijuana, Pro Football Weekly reported. Johnson, Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams and Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye admitted using the drug, according to multiple sources who have watched the interviews, the publication reported. The admissions were made during standard interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine, which are taken by every player and shared by all 32 teams for review. Johnson is being considered by the Oakland Raiders for the first overall pick in the draft. While some teams could see marijuana use as troubling, others might view the players' admissions of prior use as a sign of maturity, particularly since players are encouraged to be honest in the interviews. But the NFL's new player conduct policy, along with its hardline suspensions of the Cincinnati Bengals' Chris Henry for eight games and the Tennessee Titans' Adam "Pacman" Jones for an entire season, could cause teams to put even more emphasis on character, now that the league has made clear it will deal with off-the-field misbehavior harshly.
Deimos Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Thought about posting this myself, but I have trouble spelling marijuana sometimes. Don't see it as a big story though, everyone is saying it won't impact their draft stock at all.
HammerTime Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 I guess the NCAA doesn't drug test in the off season. Do they even drug test in season?
UKMustangFan Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Not a big deal.....I actually feel these three should be commended for their truth and honesty. Guaranteed many more have done this, but will deny it to no end. Classy honest guys IMO.

Admitting they did drugs is classy, come on!!! I don't think its that big of a deal either other than Amobi was a choir boy in everyones mind. I won't look at them any different after knowing this.

I won't look at them any different after knowing this. Not that they did drugs, but the fact that they were man enough to admit they had made past mistakes and were honest about it. As has already been stated, it won't affect their draft stock, but when they admitted it they didn't know that. The fact that they were honest about it is classy, not the actions.
02Ram54 Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Amobi Okoye was a precocious teenager in college that lived off campus... Anyone surprised that he smoked pot?
UKMustangFan Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Amobi Okoye was a precocious teenager in college that lived off campus... Anyone surprised that he smoked pot? I would be suprised if more than just a handful of these college athletes didn't at least experiment with it....Just another example of the media trying to make something out of nothing.
Original Rookie Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Amobi Okoye was a precocious teenager in college that lived off campus... Anyone surprised that he smoked pot? Doesn't mean he should admit it right before the draft.

Were they admitting to past mistakes or just that they smoked pot? I have smoked pot before but wouldn't consider it a mistake.
rockmom Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Let's see.... Do we value honesty in answering the questions that were asked, at the time they were asked? Or do we value a kid's ability to lie convincingly until he's got a contract in hand? You ask me, answering honestly when asked a compromising question shows a lot more character than after the contract is signed. If all the draftees were asked this question, were these the only 3 that said they had smoked? How many are in the draft? I find it hard to believe only 3 smoked it, but not so hard to believe that only 3 admitted it, and that doesn't mean I think Amobi is a choir boy.

pallex32 Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I myself dont find smoking pot that bad. Im close to a person that went threw Chemo Theropy and couldnt eat anything, he then starting smoking pot and could eat whatever he wanted. I dont see what the big deal is with it myself. IMO
rockmom Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 How about the good ole no comment. That's not even an answer, and implies guilt anyway. Why not just tell the truth. Whatever happened to just telling the truth?
