This is the first year I've covered baseball, but the thing I see most are kids not paying attention to the game and what is going on around them. I have heard of kids on their cell phones in the dugout:madman:

 

Pay attention to what is going on in the field. You may be able to learn something to help out with your game!!

 

If this is true regarding the cell phones, then the coach of that team should be fired on the spot.

In most of the games I've seen this season at the HS level, I am shocked by the horrendous base running of the players. This is from both teams that I may be watching. Just the lack of fundamental base running skills.

Ask Varsity High School kids that are run ruled and are not successful how much fun it is. Playing well is fun and at the High School level most kids either know fundamentals or they struggle. playing the right way is the thread and when fun is the main function you generally aren't successful at this age.

I have seen a COLLEGE coach do this during a conference game!

I can't add a whole lot to some of the very good advice that has already been given. I think the main thing that I agree with is to work hard EVERY day, practice as well as games. STRIKE made the statement that "you play like you practice". This is absolutely true! When I was coaching even in babe ruth ball, if a kid was not putting out in practice then it told me that he more than likely would "take plays off" in a game, that definately goes into a coaches decision as to who plays and who rides the pines. Learn the little things was also a very good tip. Bunting, moving a runner over by hitting to the right side, getting a ball up in the air to maybe sac fly a runner home from 3rd.. All of these little things add up to a win. Most of all ....Have Fun!! Baseball is a GREAT game, work hard, concentrate and you will enjoy a great game even more. Good Luck to all.:thumb:

Keep your head in the game and know the game situation. Know where your play is at. Hit the cut off man. My biggest peeve is kids try to pull everything. They don't go with the pitch and God forbid they try to advance a runner. Pop ups trying to pull the ball rather than a ground ball to the right side scoring the go ahead run drives me insane.

IMO, fun comes with a price tag just like everything else in life (I assume we are not talking about rec. ball here). Practicing and doing endless drills, lifting weights, running, and studying the game are all things a kid needs to do to get to the next level and have fun, but these things are not on the top of a kid's list of fun things to do. But, if they like playing the game, it does make the game more enjoyable (if not the most fun) when you perform well in the game. For example: Striking out is not fun. Going to the batting cage or doing BP several times a week... probably not fun. But, watching your line drive hit the gap is a priceless amount of fun if playing the game is what you want to do.
