Whitaker was a better coach than Jimbo Terry. I dont think anyone is denying that.

Now, what I am saying is I think Lewis Morris or Rodney Woods would both be an upgrade over Whitaker IMO.

True, but I think even Jimbo would have won at least 7 districts with the talent that came through Bell Co.

Some of the Bell Co. faithful tell me that Coach Whitaker has been on thin ice since his older son quit the football team a couple of years ago.

That may be part of it. I believe some can be attributed to the fact that he wasnt a very approachable guy. He didnt have a great personality. No doubt he knows the game of basketball, but I dont know if the personalities of those in charge up there meshed very well.

This has nothing to do with it. It has to do with Bell County having great talent and not being able to win even 1 region in the 10 years he coached. There are so many misconceptions about Coach Hilton. He wants Bell County to have a good basketball program. He comes to the majority of the games and supports the team.

That and despite all the talent he did have on the team, there was still some that didnt play b/c he was the coach.

During Coach Whitaker's 10 years IMO Bell had the best team in the region in 98, 2001, 2002, and 2007 (I know this one is very arguable, but they were the most athletic). Also during that time, its not like Bell played in the best district.

I think 02 is arguable too. They had no great perimeter player that is often needed, especially in the mountains. Ely stayed in foul trouble, and Corum was still growing into his body. If Winkler had a good guard and Ely stayed out of foul trouble I would be with you.

 

No doubt 01 was a great team. There was no excuse for that team not to make state.

IF, and that's a huge IF, Whitaker goes to Corbin to be Tony P's assistant, that would really solidify Corbin's chances of being the #1 team in the 13th in preseason.

That's not the school I'm talking about. I was also told he might end up at Letcher Central ... who knows, he's a good guy. He'll land somewhere.

I dont see a man with his win loss record and 10 straight District Chamionships at his age stepping down to a position as an assistant at another school in the 13th Region. He has proven he knows how to run a high quality High School basketball program and will surely be a very good head coach somewhere else for several more years.

I'm sure Coach Hicks could find a seat for him on the Scott Co. bench - as long as he brings his son with him

Hounds could always use another quality coach in the basketball program. Whitaker will have no problem finding a place if he wants to coach anymore. He maybe content to watch his son play college ball and watch his youngest continue his development as a fine player as well.

I know Coach Whitaker's wife wouldn't really be up for moving. She has been in Bell Co. her whole life. It could be he just decides to teach, drive a bus, and watch his boys play ball.

FWIW, I had heard a while back that this may be his last coaching job with how well he liked Bell Co. and the fact that they just built a nice house a year or two ago. Who knows?
