KyGirl, really good post. If someone wants to go to a church with a female Pastor so be it. I don't think God would mind, but I choose to have a Man.

What do you think about Paul teachings?

Thanks AL, to be honest I go to a Methodist church and have been going to the same church for over 40 years. During that time we have had just one female preacher and many male preachers. My best friend from high school is a woman preacher. So I've definitely done homework on this subject. You know I like both male & female preachers. They bring different perspectives to the table. For instance, the female preacher's sermon during Easter was from a mother's eyes(she was the mom of two sons). My current preacher is male, he's truly called by God & has a gift with music.

Now to get to your question.

Paul when dealing with the situation regarding women and speaking in the early church speaks very specifically, "If you have anything to say to your husband, settle it at home. Don't settle it here in the church in front of the whole crowd." Their were peculiar situations in the early church that doesn't apply in today's world. Example: that same passage in Timothy argues against women cutting their hair or wearing jewelry. Then we say wait that was dealing with particular circumstances in the ancient world, a situation where women with cut hair & jewelry were looked upon as prostitutes. Times have changed. We're dealing with a specific situation in Timothy, and it should be recognized as such(IMHO).

Check out the story of Mary Magdeline at the tomb when she encountered a risen Jesus. He gave her a commision to tell his disciples that the Gospel of a risen Saviour was complete. She was ordained by God to spread the Completed Gospel!!! In my opinion , it appears SHE was the FIRST ordained minister in the newly formed church. That is just my opinion.

many people believe Mary Magdelene was a prostitute. In my research, I found that many scholars do not agree with this. They felt she was being confused with the woman, Mary, at the well who had been married many times. Mary Magdelene had demons cast out of her, but when I wrote my paper for a college english class, I chose to write in her defense, to prove her innocense. Ample research material was available. I agree with "isthatall yougot". My grade on the paper: A+ with a very cynical sidenote from my professor. He wasn't happy that I had disproved a very core belief in his religion.

First of all, in what religion is Mary Magdalene's alleged promiscuity a "very core belief"? Secondly, I would be hard pressed to find anyone serious about their religion who didn't know about this common misconception.

cch5432, I don't know how "serious" he was about his religion, and I do not claim to be an expert on religions, .but he wasn't happy with my paper. He was catholic; however, I do not know if this is considered as core to other catholics as it seemed to him.

In addition, I think you would be very surprised at the number of people that do believe Mary was a prostitute. Most because that is what they have been taught and have just accepted the word of preachers and teachers.

This paper was written in '84.

I'm like you on that. To be honest Im a preacher and I got saved under a woman preacher, so it is kind of hard for me to dis them, because if God calls them then who am I to question that?

But I agree I would rather not go to a church with a woman pastoring, I can justify them preaching but have a hard time pastoring. But as long as they are preaching the truth I dont have a problem with it just wont be a member there.

You will find Im not very hard to see eye to eye with on the Bible. I dont mind these type discussions on the Bible but Im not one to argue with people over it. I think that turns into contention then.

So in a short way of saying what I said, if God calls them and they are bringing forth fruit, then who are we to question it?

That's sort of my view on it too...there are verses that seem to state pretty clearly that preachers are supposed to be men. Yet, I've seen women preachers who were very good, heard stories (like the ones on here) about good women preachers, and then as a previous post stated, there are examples of women playing prominent roles in the early church, along with verses that reference women prophesying...so, it's not a topic that I can form a really strong stance on either way.

Never in the bible has a female Head Pastor ever been recorded, to my knowledege. However, co-pastors, deaconesses, and church leaders as females are. I don't have a problem with it as long as they are not #1 on the proverbial "totem-pole".

If God gives them the words to say, then they are meant to be said.

I also find it interesting that less than 10 pages away from the, "women should learn in silence" verse. It mentions the female deaconess from Rome. Interesting...

What did Jesus tell Mary in John 20? "Go tell them I have risen". The women at the well. "Go tell your people I am here and bring them back". This is not a Salvation issue...As long as Jesus is being preached that is the main thing. Now we have a choice between a man or woman Preacher and like I mentioned before I choose a Man but if I want to hear a Lady preach I'm not breaking any sins.

Look up the qualifcations of preacher(Bishop) in the New Testament...Can a woman be THE HUSBAND TO ONE WIFE?

Bishop and Deacon have different qualifications in 1st Timothy. It says the same thing under Deacon, but I've never been able to reconcile that passage with Romans 16:1-2, wherein Paul recites that "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church at Cenchreae." I think its also debatable whether Tabitah (Dorcas) is called a disciple by Jesus in Acts 9:36.

I feel that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a female pastor. If she can save lives through the Word of the Lord then she is doing what is expected of all of us. As far as a woman not teaching a man? How many men that have posted had female Sunday school teachers? That isn't to be taken as a sarcastic remark but a true question. I know that most of the church's that I have belonged to had women as the Sunday school teachers. Mothers have been teaching their sons for ages about the Bible and what His Word is all about. IMO, that is another one of those passages in the Bible that was not meant to be taken quite so literally. But, that's just my two cents worth...

What church do you attend if you don't mind me asking? My father in law is a Methodist minister and had a church in Ashland about 8 or 10 years ago.

I had always been taught that deacon in the original language of the Bible means servant and not teacher.

It does. My post actually should have been in the women deacons thread and not in this one.
