John Belein

YES, I DO remember him saying that somewhere...His bias is clearly showing in this thread

That has a little (OK a LOT) to do with my dislike for WVU, but not my thoughts on Beilein. :D

I hold that stance because I saw UC bully them around at the Shoe in each of the last two seasons with a depleted roster and marginal talent. They rely too much on the 3 ball and the 1-3-1 is a little too gimmicky for my taste. I respect his system and the talent he pulls out of marginal recruits, but he's not a guy that would excel in an elite job. I just don't think he's the right fit for a UK, UNC, UCLA, Kansas type job...

And that is by far my biggest gripe with him.

I think he does that because it is something that teams have to take time to prepare for and without superior athletes on the defensive end he needs every advantage he can get.

My big question with him would be could he land the big recruits at UK. I think he would def do better than at WVU. I agree he does rely on the 3 to much and Im not neccasarly a huge fan of 1-3-1. But I think he is a good coach.

He's no doubt a very good coach. I just don't think he's a good fit at the elite level...

1. Are you still hung up on UK getting in the tournament? You need to get over it.

2. The fact that he only has 2 players in the Top 100 says enough about his recruiting...

3. Classy guy, but as GT said, far from elite. Kentucky is elite.

1.What the heck are you even talking about? I have never made the first post about Kentucky playing in the NCAA tournament and I certainly have not gotten involved in all of the silliness in the mutitudes of all these ridiculous threads. The truth is Kentucky did not deserve to be in the tournament over West Va. For one thing I am a UK fan, but I'm not blind UK fan. UK may have played a tougher overall schedule but they did not win any of those tough games though , did they? They never beat the first team that they should not have beaten, but they sure as heck lost to a bunch of teams they should have beaten. WVa on the other hand did the exact oposite with a very young team.

2. The fact that he even had 2 top 100 players at Morgantown says a lot to me. Have you ever been there? What it does say a lot to me is that he can flat out coach with what talent that he has the resources at hand to attract with.

As I said before, personally I like his brand of basketball and I like the brand of what recruits he does bring in. Also as I stated you can have your prima donnas (ex Crawford, Bradley). It sure would be funny if he could get Patterson to WVU and whoever is at Kentucky cant. From what I understand Patterson's mom loves the guy.

Since you are a Marshall guy, are you familiar with a guy by the name of Marshall Reynolds, or Phil Cline?

No. I was only there for a year...

Big time megabuck Marshall boosters. Thought you may have known them.

I was 18 and not all that well connected back then. I did work at WMUL while there and had a lot of fun...

I really like Belein and I really think UK fans would love that offense. As far as not being an elite coach you never know. As has been said he has recruited well to Morgantown and the Mountaineers have had their most successful run since the days of Jerry West.

Now that's funny....

What's so funny about that. I would love to see another Pittsnogle at Kentucky.

I think he is a good coach and love his style of play. They all have to be able to shoot the three.

Say what you will, but in all truthfullness West Virginia should have been in the NCAA tournament way before Kentucky should have, and with Belein only having two players that were considered in the top 100 in their recruiting classes makes it even more impressive. You can have all of your Mayo's and the Mickie Dees. I want to see players putting it all on the line every second of every game and play within a team concept.

Kentucky got in this year ahead of some other teams by the simple fact that they are Kentucky, and some of the others just simply were not Kentucky.

Belein, in my opinion, would be a steal.

I do not agree on WVU should had been in the tourney before U.K., I do agree that WVU should had been in the NCAA tourney.

I 100% agre that Belien would be a steal for the Cats, the job that he has done EVERYWHERE that he has been is very impressive. The man can coach bsketball, he doesn't necessarily have to have the "hamburger boys" to do it. Look at the job that he has done with the talent that he has had and just think what a team that he would have with the kind of talent that he could draw to a U.K.. We are talking about U.K. here, just look at the job he has done at a WVU, where basketball is just an afterthought and something to do and a good "date" night untill football season rolls around again.

Yep, I am on the J.B. bandwagon and nope, I do not think that he will be the next U.K. coach, just wishful thinking.

3. Classy guy, but as GT said, far from elite. Kentucky is elite.

You name me one coach that had an "elite" resume that the University of Kentucky has ever hired before they came into the program. You guys are talking as if they all have had national championships under their belts before coming to UK.

Lets look back:

1.Adolph Rupp: Kind of senseless to even bring his name because he is the one that made Kentucky basketball from nothing.

2. Joe B. Hall: Was on Rupp's staff as an assistant for many years. He had " zero" head coaching experience when he was hired to take over the program.

3. Eddie Sutton: Had only one "Final 4" appearance to his credit at Arkansas, and a few good teams, but nothing more.

4. Rick Pitino: Had only one "Final 4" appearance on his resume with his team from Providence and helped the Knicks to turn their program going in the upward direction for one year. No Division Championships, no NBA titles, just started to turn some losses to wins. Remember Pitino was way down on UK's wish list when they hired him. He was considered nothing more than an up and comer.

5.Tubby Smith: Got Tulsa into the Sweet 16 and Georgia to the elite 8 with what most considered subpar talent. Nothing more.

Someone please tell me how that of all the coaches in the history of Kentucky hires have had a superior resume over what John Belein currently has, and how they were considered "elite" when they came here. Not one guy that has ever been hired to be Kentucky's next head coach can say that they had the opportunity to coach in a National Championship game prior to sitting on the Kentucky bench. Yet once they all got to Kentucky they all (except for Sutton) won National Championships. They were all considered nothing more than just hard working up and comers.

Some of you guys need to take your noses out of the air for just a moment and just think about what you are talking about when you talk about all of this elite nonsense. The University of Kentucky by just being the University of Kentucky has had just as much as anything to do with making these guys what you are referring to as being "elite caliber coaches" as what their own coaching abilities have done for them. Every single coach that has ever been at Kentucky can say nothing more than they have had the extreme fortune to ride on the coattails of the tradition that Adolph Rupp built.

^I'm sorry, but I'm just not seeing it. Tubby never had a losing season. Belein has. As recently as 4 seasons ago. Besides, had you heard of Belein before their run the past 3 seasons or so? Didn't think so. He's not a household name for a reason. He's a good coach, but not a great coach.

Plus, when UK looks for a coach, I'm sure they're looking for youth in their search. How old is Belein? I think his prime has past. He just not the right fit for the Cats.
