March 28, 200719 yr Author Those "Gifts" have been done away with. The Apostles had them and the Corinthian church wanted to have them. When Jesus was in the garden he was at his most troubled time on earth. As he prayed to the Father he didn't use Tongues. If he would have used them it would have been then. Bottom line...If someone wants to speak in tongues and they feel closer to God by doing it so be it, but scripture shows there are requirements. Gift of tongues brought people from other lands the understanding of the Gospel. This gift later became a concern to the teachers of Apostolic times which through 1st Cor. 12:10 was to warn believers not to be misled. God is not the author of confusion. Any message that is incapable of being understood is not of God. Has anyone ever heard Billy Graham speak in tongues?

April 3, 200719 yr Author Proves that a man who has preached to more humans on the face of the earth never speaks in tongues.
April 3, 200719 yr Didn't the apostolic gifts pass away with the apostles? It is my understanding that the apostles could pass those gifts along to other men, but, those men couldn't pass it along to anyone else. These powers were given to the apostles and they could discrimately pass those gifts along to others to aid them in spreading the word when the Church was in her infancy. But only the apostles could pass the power along, the recipient simply received the power and not the ability to pass it on.
April 3, 200719 yr Proves that a man who has preached to more humans on the face of the earth never speaks in tongues. Exactly. It doesn't prove anything when it comes to debating whether it's needed today or whether anyone has that gift today. My understanding of spiritual gifts is that different people receive different gifts from the Spirit...meaning that it's extremely unlikely that any one person would possess every gift. Maybe tongues wasn't one of Billy Graham's gifts.

My understanding of spiritual gifts are that they are bestowed upon the believer by the Holy Spirit for the profit of the whole body of believers. Different people have different gifts and if they're using them as they should, the body of believers should benefit from everyone using their gifts. Regarding tongues, that's a tough on for me. I'm not sure I believe that any gift has ceased, but I am highly skeptical when I hear someone speaking in tongues.

Billy Graham isn't the end-all-be-all of messengers of the Word, and even I dare say it, gets it wrong from time to time. As someone posted before, different gifts are given out to different people. Some are more common than others, and just because Billy G doesn't have it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Speaking in tongues is the most notoriously misused/counterfeited gift, but I don't think that means it should be totally dismissed.
April 4, 200719 yr The nine spiritual gifts mentioned in I Corinthians Ch. 12, are indeed still being used today. People are still receiving miracles, healings, prophecy, etc. If you have ever been in a service were these manifestations of the Spirit take place, then you would find that they are much needed, and as real as we are. We are instruments of God. Though God is all knowing, there are people on earth who just will not listen. God uses us as instruments of the Spirit to reach these people.
April 4, 200719 yr Author Cawood see post #19. People can recieve healings, miracles, agree 100%...Its the giving of these gifts that are the concern. That was only for a certain group of people that was mentioned earlier.
April 5, 200719 yr It is my personal belief that the Bible is a mere window of what God has to reveal to us. He gave us only what he thought we could grasp in our human state. I excitedly await what He has to show me and teach me once I get to heaven. Just because it wasn't recorded in the Bible, doesn't mean that Jesus never spoke in tongues. I can't say if he did or didn't. I just believe that God hasn't told us or recorded for us everything He could have or will reveal to us in the future. Joyce Meyer says that tongues is a "prayer language" shared between the Holy Spirit and the one speaking in tongues. She says that for her, she speaks in her prayer language for a sentence or two and the continues praying in english, and vice versa. She believes this is her interaction with the Holy Spirit. She explained this better than anyone to my understanding. I don't have the gift, but if God chooses to give it to me someday, I'll accept it.

That was only for a certain group of people that was mentioned earlier. The passages concerning Spiritual Gifts in the Bible seem to say that the Spirit gives the gift as He sees fit...not the apostles. It's certainly possible that the Spirit could use the apostles in some instances, but I don't think that's the only way a person can/could receive a Spiritual Gift.
April 5, 200719 yr I may have said this before, in the church I was raised in speaking of tongues was a gift as well as the interpetation.
April 9, 200719 yr Cawood see post #19. People can recieve healings, miracles, agree 100%...Its the giving of these gifts that are the concern. That was only for a certain group of people that was mentioned earlier. In the book of Acts, when they were filled with the Holy Ghost, the Bible says that it is for all generations to come. These nine gifts are nine seperate manifestations of the Holy Ghost. Therefore, they are for all generations to come.
April 9, 200719 yr I will just state my belief on this, and I dont want to really get into it. I ama Church of God (Pentecostal) minister. I dont see were it passed away and I believe it is real today. But I really dont want to get into it because the main thing is to be washed in the blood of Jesus, we may see different on a few things but if we got the blood we can look over seeing things different.
April 9, 200719 yr Author Belfry...really good point. In Philippians 1:17 Paul tells how the "Former", not sincerely, and they stir up trouble for me while I'm in chains... They preached Christ out of selfish ambition. "But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way Christ is being preached and becaus of this I rejoice". Paul is saying that even though we differ on the Gift issues the main thing we still are believers of the Saving Grace Gospel. Its not a Salvation issue. Some churches wash each others feet, some the Lord's supper every Sunday, some attend worship on a Saturday, some play instruments in worship. Bottom line is what? Jesus is being preached.
