March 27, 200719 yr I've been researching this "Gift of Tongue speaking" and I don't have it and feel its not needed. I think that God is all knowing and a different language to him is useless. The "Gift of healing" was another gift given to the Apostles at the day of Penecost that isn't used by folks today. Now if someone wanted to "Speak" to God in a certain way I have no right to try to interject my think so's, and at least he is trying to talk to God and thats a good thing. I've watched some preachers on TV and I just don't understand their way. I also have some folks upset when I've asked questions and showed scripture. Do you use these Gifts or know some folks who do? How do you feel when you hear it done? If this has been covered recently...sorry.
March 27, 200719 yr No, they don't. The apostles lived in a world that it was not easy to learn 2nd, 3rd or more languages. Yet they were supposed to witness to these countries that spoke different languages. The Holy Spirit provided "tongues" or speaking other languages without studying them as a way to offset that need. Look at Acts 2.... 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 (emphasis mine) Seems pretty clear on the purpose and what tongues were. Today with the ability to learn to communicate in multiple languages and with interpreters, it is not a needed gift. And the way we usually see it, is ridiculous IMHO. Why speak about Jesus in a manner that no one can understand ESPECIALLY an unsaved person? Defeats the purpose of speaking about Jesus.
March 27, 200719 yr When in church as a little kid, we had a minister who would speak in tongues, and would have someone be his interpreter. I thought is was stupid then, and from what lbbc posted, I don't think its needed today.

March 27, 200719 yr From the study that I have done, speaking in tongues is more an effect on the hearers than the ones speaking. In other words, the person speaks in English and the people who only speak Spanish, Japanese, etc. hear in their own language. I have heard of speakers who have spoken to audiences and were understood in the people's language even though they did not speak their language.

Remember Peter went on to tell this crowd about Christ and thousands were baptized. Absolutely, it was a gift from the Holy Spirit that was desperately needed at that time. The speaking of languages you did not know and the understanding of languages that you did not know. If you are speaking in a language that the lost (Peter's crowd) can't understand, what good is it?

Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. 1 Corinthians 14:6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching? 1 Corinthians 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. and most importantly, 1 Corinthians 14:39 Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. Paul makes sure to emphasize that tongues is a gift, but it is not THE gift. It is a tool to be used for God, not a means of self-acclamation.
March 27, 200719 yr Maybe God just gave the Apostles a Babel Fish, like in "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" or they had a universal translator like Star Trek.
March 27, 200719 yr Author I travel in my job and meet new people on every trip. I ask them about their beliefs and the last four folks I met they believed in the Gifts. In fact my buddy who travels with me told me "to change the subject I can't talk to you". Paul has said that he spoke in Tongues and he addressed this with the Church in Corinth They wanted to have this gift but he explained that not everyone had this gift. The bible speaks about two dfferent types of Tongues...One where the Apostles had the knowledge of other languages and the one here people praised God. This Gift is no longer needed.

March 28, 200719 yr Author Because people can share the Gospel in their native language. We all know of people who are over seas doing just that. The "tongue speaking" you hear now days is just jibberish. Billy Graham says its not needed. Jesus never used it. If they claim to heal people let them go to the Children's Hospital and have at it. They can't do it.

And if the Bible says its a gift, how can you claim its jibberish? The Bible specifically states that the one who speaks in tongues doesn't understand what he says, which is why others have the gift of interpretation. Romans 8:26-27 also says: 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
