South Laurel had some issues with shot selection in both games, particularly Hammonds and Proffitt. It seemed like they were both making sure they got their shots.

 

And that's why they'll be sitting in the stands tomorrow instead of playing. Trust me Holmes used to be the same way until Covcath showed them if they want to show how good they really are, they're going to have to play team ball because everyone already knows how talented they are. IMO this was the best TEAM ball I've seen Holmes play all year. Everyone was on the same page.

 

That's bad senior leadership on both hammonds and Proffit's part. You can't have a SELFISH PG....Duran has scored a combined 7 points in 2 games but he's not complaining. Everyone has to play their role. Rice, Henderson and Hill are who's going to win the game for Holmes, but they can't do it without Duran's passing ability and Nelson's rebounding/defense.

Rice is very good at finding an open spot in the zone. Sometimes it was in the middle, but most of the time he snuck in behind the defense - 22 would penetrate and dump it down to Rice.

The few times SL threw it into the post they scored. Their kids seemed to want to play outside - instead of posting up and using their height.

Henderson was in Profitt's jock - plain and simple.

 

#22 is Duran Jefferson.

Don't think Proffit scored until the fourth quarter. Henderson played outstanding man "D" on Proffit and I think that was the difference in the game.

 

Also thought that Jefferson is doing an outstanding job at the point.

 

I saw Holmes play early in the year without Jefferson. They are much better with him. His sharing of the ball is contagious.

One of my all time favorite things is attacking a zone from the short corner (where the free throw lane meets the baseline).

 

Holmes was masterful at it today scoring numerous easy point-blank baskets.

 

Congrats to Coach Henley in employing the tactic. It is the single most effective weapon against a zone that I have ever seen or used. I hope others recognized and appreciated that particular phase of their offense.

I think another reason SC has not looked very impressive offensively is because they have been subing so much trying to steal minutes of rest for their starters and foul trouble. In the opener the starters played less than 21 min. Today most of the starters played about 24 min, except Mackey only played 14.

 

In the first game SC got a huge lead early and cruised. In the second game, SC was in foul trouble, esp. Mackey. Plus, he's got an injury to his finger that's kept him from playing his best.

Almost all of Holmes points in this tournament have been lay ups or short jumpers. Duran does a great job at penetrating and dishing it off. I think this is much more effective against a zone than moving the ball around and settling for a jumper.

I think Holmes matches up against Scott co. better than any team in this tourney, It will be a good one tomm mourning.

I know that the Scott Co people were hoping for a South Laurel win for that reason.

I don't think Proffit was playing selfish, I think he was just trying to lead his team. I think the biggest problem for SL is that their big 3 were the ONLY ones involved in the offense, the other 2 (no matter who they were) knew that there was no place for them in the offense. It was almost as if SL was only playing with 3 on offense.

Congrats to Holmes on a fine win. I was there and sitting right behind the Laurel bench, literally and those boys were worn out. I was impressed with their big Freshman Center although he was winded most of the game and fouled out. Holmes was too athletic and purely better in the paint. Henderson was player of the game with the Defense on Proffitt. Rice was wicked down low and Hill seemed silent most of the game but came away with over 20pts which is also impressive.

 

I thought Hammonds was very good for SL but Trey Smith got in foul trouble and he never got back in the flow. It was the highlight of my weekend seeing that game, too bad the Dogs lost to eventual state champ Scott Co.

I was impressed with their big Freshman Center although he was winded most of the game and fouled out.

 

I've seen him since he was a sixth-grader, and he has improved tremendously, far beyond what I could ever imagine, since then. They figure he'll probably grow to be about 6-10, and will be the anchor for the program the next three years along with Matt Gilbert (23), who also got some big-game experience as a part-time starter this year.

I know the people close to the SC program wanted to play South. They felt like Holmes presented much more matchup problems for SC.
