I believe you are correct marooncat. I am not positive if it is just coaches or athletic directors that vote also but I think it is voted on a region basis only.

The vote is the same for the boys as it is for the girls . If you pay your 15.00 for each person you can have all the votes you want.

Don't care how many of you say it, no way Daniel should get the award over the record- setting Vanhoose (or McDavid for that matter). This obviously needs to be taken out of the hands of the people who have been voting on these awards, and maybe given to the writers. Same goes for the girls side of this too.

So, the writers know more than the people directly involved in athletics? Yeah, the same writers that year in and year out give more press to some than others whether or not the production on the court is equal to the press given to them. Just look at the two players stats and there is no problem at all with Matthew Daniel winning this award instead of Vanhoose. And yes, McDavid had a great year too but once again the stats are on the side of Matthew Daniel as well.

It is a basketball player of the year award. It is not a student/athlete award. In this day and age of social promotion and similar touchy, feely programs, it is unlikely that anyone has a 1.5 GPA in high school. However, if he/she did and averaged 30 ppg, he/she should be a serious candidate for POY.

 

Academic honorees are not required to exhibit any athletic ability. Athletic honorees should not be, and normally are not, required to exhibit academic ability. I doubt that GPAs had any influence on who got this award and, though it is not particularly important in this matter, I am confident that VanHoose, McDavid, Barker, and several more have very fine GPAs. I do know that the three named were excellent students while at Rose Hill.

 

 

Yes it is a basketball award. Since the 1980's (yes when I was a student) at Raceland, and hopefully other area schools, an athlete must maintain a "C" average to be eligible to play a sport. The grades are reviewed weekly and if the grades aren't there, the athlete doesn't play. With that said, a 1.5 gpa athlete wouldn't be eligible to play ball and therefore wouldn't average 30 ppg.

 

Indirectly, gpa's do play a part in basketball stats and in POY awards.

Oh, so since the award did not go to Vanhoose it had nothing to do with Daniel's great year, it had to be something personal that the voters had against Vanhoose, McDavid or one of the other outstanding senior players in our region, right? People, Matthew Daniel year in and year out has been outstanding the last 3-4 years and this year was excellent especially in light of the lack of a great supporting cast. McDavid had Thomas and Wilcox; Vanhoose had Gill, Blair and Robinson. Daniel had no players as good as those on his team. To think that he got this award for something personal the voters may have had against another team or player is a little reach.

 

Don't be a big baby about it. Nobody said take it away from Daniels and he did not deserve it. I personally said that GPA had nothing to do with this award! Enough said!

Get over him winning and move on with your life. Enough said.

At this point, nothing surprises me about the 16th region any longer. IMO, it is the most screwed up region in the state. And that includes any votes, coaches opinion, media opinion, and it's posters ( of which I am one, obviously) so there is nothing surprising for me any longer when I see POY, COY, SSOY(student section of the year,, ) etc.. I'll blame it on all of the family trees that don't fork throughout eastern KY.

Wow, I was not aware that Matthew Daniel was the only player that defended Vanhoose that game. The coaches thought that Matthew Daniel was the most outstanding senior player in the region this year, I don't see how that is such a stretch especially considering the numbers across the board that he had in comparison to Vanhoose's and McDavid's as well. And he for sure did not have the supporting cast of either McDavid or Vanhoose. An outstanding student-athlete won this award and I am very glad that it was Matthew Daniel.:dancingpa :ylsuper: :jump: :banana:

Here is something to think about. Possibly the coaches who did the voting put a little thought behind this. The winner of this award, who is obviously Matthew Daniels recieves an automatic tryout to the Ky All-Star team. Vanhoose couldnt try out because of his knee, so maybe the coaches felt that Daniels was the next best player that would have a chance to make the all-star team and represent the 16th region in the various all star games this team plays in. Not because he is more talented that Mcdavid, but because Mcdavid's lack of size at his position would hurt him at making a team like this. I personally thought it was a deserving award for Mr. Daniels and Coach Mays. I just thought I would throw that in there.

Vanhoose, Mcdavid, and Daniel all three had good years, and are great kids. The kabc vote is done by whoever pays their $15 and not too hard to influence their vote, all it

takes is a phone call and a favor. One school could pay for 5-8 votes if they were organized about it and that would take care of the kabc vote. I think the coaches that really matter (and have a lot more at stake than $15) are the college coaches and its pretty obvious who they thought was the best player in the region. The argument about having a supporting cast and stats is pretty bogus , the weaker your supporting cast is, the greater your individual stats should be, also it is easier to pad stats on a losing team than a winning team.

Just stating some pretty obvious facts. Good luck to all the 16th region seniors. It was a pretty good year to watch them play.

Gametime-- I was at the Rowan County game, Rowan County did play some zone, when they played man, Daniel was guarding Vanhoose, and it seemed like he scored more than 42 but I could be wrong
