March 20, 200719 yr The following report also indicates the Bulls are interested in Travis Ford. They asked for permission to speak to EKU's Jeff Neubauer, too, but he wasn't interested. South Alabama's Pelphrey Interviews For USF Position
March 20, 200719 yr Would be a nice step up for Pelphrey and USF would benefit from it. Best of luck to him.
March 20, 200719 yr Good for him. Hopefully he will keep winning and one day be roaming the sidelines at Rupp for UK.
March 20, 200719 yr Author I think it would be a good stepping stone for Pelphrey depending on the level of commitment from the AD's office. Given the work he'll have to do to bring the fans to the Sun Dome, if Woodward is offering McCullum's salary, John may be better off staying at South Alabama. The alum money is there, so if Woodward is trying go cheap, his head should be on the block as well.
March 20, 200719 yr Author Went there, as I did UK, Marquette, and U of the Cumberlands. Did not graduate. My degree is from Morehead.
March 20, 200719 yr A little for Phelphrey and Ford. It is obviously a step up from where he is now, but I don't think it would be for Ford. Although for Ford it would be leaving a low A-10 for the powerful Big East, he has a successful program that is above USA right now. Ford's team can win the the A-10 and it will look a lot better than Phelphrey winning the Sun Belt.
March 20, 200719 yr I have to agree with SSF, UMass has more hoops tradition and star power than USF right now in basketball, regardless of conference affiliation. If South Florida is as serious about raising their hardwood profile as they've been about football, though, that could change pretty quick. To clarify, I think it would be a BIG step up for Pelphrey, and a latteral move for Ford.

To clarify, I think it would be a BIG step up for Pelphrey, and a latteral move for Ford. And that's not a comment on either's coaching ability. That's just where they currently fall in the pecking order of conferences. My question is this: USF has been to the NCAA twice in their history. Yes, they're Big East now, but they weren't always Big East and they had no success. With Florida a solid program and Florida State and Miami competitive in a conference that is more local, can USF ever really become a solid program? The Big East is huge and Florida people don't associate with the Big East...would Pelphrey be stepping into a black hole that he might never be able to escape?
