IMO, when you have a mid-major that upsets a higher seed, espcially a team like Duke, it gives those people who push for more mid-majors to be in the tournament fuel for their fire...If VCU, or any mid-major for that matter, beats a big name team in the first round and continues on through the tournament, sure it's good for the tournament...Everyone loves good basketball. On the other hand, I think it will cause problems and controversy in the future with other mid-majors getting in...People will say "Well George Mason made it to the FF last year," and "VCU upset Duke in the first round." People will develop a belief that ALL mid-majors with a decent record belong in the dance, when IMO they don't. A mid-major with the right draw can pull off the upset...A mid-major with the wrong draw will get hammered, and looked at as a wasted bid. JMO.
March 16, 200719 yr It will look a lot better 5 years from now, when people look back a see that VCU beat Duke in the NCAA. What they won't remember is that the Blue Devils finished their season going 4-8. It might have said Duke across their chest tonight, but this team did not play like Duke.
