Where UK was 10 years ago was a state that is impossible to maintain or improve. The only way to go is down. Simple logic really.... If Rick Pitino had stayed at Kentucky, do you seriously believe we would have lost 10-plus games five out of the next ten years? But look at Pitino's overall tenure. He went to three final 4's (93, 96, 97). He was runner-up once (97). He was national champion once (96). Two of the other seasons were final 8 seasons (92 & 95). Then the other was a second-round loss (94). Overall, that's a pretty good run. And yes, that type of a LONG-TERM run can be maintained. It would be almost impossible, as you said, to maintain or improve on the 96-98 years. But overall, looking at an 8-10 year time-span, a solid coach could certainly contend with regularity. Tubby is not doing that at all. It's simple logic really...

I think my favorite moment of Gottlieb's comparison of UK and Missouri State is how Mizzou State had that win over Wisconsin and that's bigger than any of UK's wins (true), and pretty much discounted any of UK's early season wins because they were "early in the season". Missouri State beat Wisconsin in like the third or fourth game of the year. UK has two impressive wins...UL and UT..both won't really mean squat to the comm. due to extenuating circumstances...while I think UK will make it...he makes very valid points.

Well let's see...Under Tubby they have a national title (98), I know, your arguement will be that he did it with Pitino's players, 3 Elite Eight appearances (99, 03, 05) and two #1 overall seeds (03, 04). I would say that is contending with a decent degree of regularity.

If that's so, you aren't going to be satisfied regardless of who the coach is....

My point is that Tubby Smith has eroded University of Kentucky basketball. And who cares if we beat Louisville (three years; not two)? The fact is: Pitino brought UK back to its rightful status as a college basketball giant. Tubby Smithhas taken us back to mediocrity.
