Nativist Backlash?

I honestly don't have an answer to fix the law, but I'm not against a guest worker program. I would do several things. All foreign workers would have tax withheld at the highest tax bracket. This gives you more assurance that they will file a tax return and is something I've seen other countries do. I would not withhold or pay FICA and Medicare on them, nor would they rececive benefits later.

I also think the passes would need to be carefully monitored. That means finding out how many guest workers we need and in what industries. You would then allow a sufficient number of workers in to work in those areas ONLY. If you think these rules are tough, try finding a job in the European Community if you don't come from there.

I agree. The only experience that I have had with forgein work permits is with our Spanish teacher here at school. With the shortage of language teachers in KY, the state department has went to other countries (well, Spain at least) to find teachers willling to come to KY and teach Spanish. The teacher we have is wonderful, but it was very complicated - even with the state department's help - to get her taken care of.

:thumb: :p :thumb: Lets not also forget the amount of times that Americans have priced themselves out of jobs because they expect greater than equiliberium wages for their task, aka the UAW.

One of the things that I found ironically interesting is that the foreign workers MOVE to where the jobs are while American citizens EXPECT the jobs to move to them.

Hat's off to both of you, for hitting the nail on the head about the unemployment issues in America today. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

You are right. I guess we are all descendents of illegal immigrants. Except for the Native American blood in some of us.

I agree that they best method would be to pursue the correct legal paths for entry. Could someone fill me in on how many Mexican immigrants we legally allow into the country each year? What is the process? If you are dirt poor, do you stand a chance? I really don't know the answers, but would like to.

From what I have witnessed, I think that in many cases, people will lump them all together - legals or illegals - we don't want "them" here because they are different. We fear different.

I disagee with this last statement wholeheartedly. Not once have I ever heard anyone (other then extremists that want to completely close the borders) that is in favor of increased border security say anything against legal immigration. All of the talking heads that I have heard on radio or TV that favor a border fence also speak positively about legal immigration.

I would love for someone that is against increased border security or favors totally open borders to explain to me why our national sovreignty is not important. I would also like for one of those people to explain to me why being in the country illegally is not a crime that should be prosecuted.

Just to clarify, as you quoted me...I am not in favor of "open borders". My original comments in this thread were concerning the use of landmines.

Your second point brings up a good question. How do we prosecute illegals? If we throw them in jail, aren't we still footing the bill?

Here is the most simple of all facts that many pundits and politicians do not get, or choose to ignore. (Amazingly I think GWB does get it).

Were it not for Mexicans and other people entering the US from Latin American countries we THE U.S. would be in a state of population decline. When you have a population decline the economy sufferes (not enough people to do jobs) as does programs like social security and other pension plans.

We are running out of people in the 25-50 age range and if we do not allow the workers, aliens, illegals to enter the country we are going to be in a fix.

Even witht the slow economic growth of this first quarter, enemployment is still amazingly low at around 4% - why? There are more jobs than people to fill them.

Just for kix and grins, the terrorist of 9-11 were here legally and had gone through the process. They were not crossing the border looking for jobs.

Simple put we need the immigrant population to grow and we need to find a way to get them to pay SS taxes to help supports those of us who will need it in 10-15 years.

one more - the Bible (for those Christians on here) tells to to "love the alien in our countries". FWIW Matthew 25 tells us that whatever we do unto the least of these we do unto Jesus, and if we do poorly - then we are separated from the sheep and associated with the goats.

Yesssssssss.......and why won't they come back?

They often do. And by often I mean almost always.

In my area of the world, generally the Mexicans are doing jobs that the young Americans refuse to do and consider beneath them or simply they don't work as hard. I have never met a farmer that has indicated that the youth of America are outworking the Mexican workers they hire.

The farmers are left with two options. No workers because the youth would rather not work or workers that don't work as hard.
