March 9, 200719 yr I want to know how many Mexicans we grant citizenship to each year - not the number of illegals.
March 9, 200719 yr Unless my history recollection fails me, most showed up unannounced at Ellis, were met by officials, who wrote down their names (sometimes incorrectly), deloused them and sent them on their way. It was here that they first saw these words: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! " I agree. But again times have changed. Those officials never dreamed of those people they deloused, trying to blow up a building with an airplane. Now that has to be a consideration. And those people, though unannounced, did meet the officials, they did not try to run around them under cover of darkness.
March 9, 200719 yr Two points and then I have to get some sleep tonight... 1) I truly believe that several of you feel that if immigrants are trying to enter LEGALLY, then you are fine with it. I feel that I MUST find out how many we do allow to enter legally before I can be content with just that. 2) Are we worried about Mexicans blowing up buildings and airplanes? Our own citizens can do that - we need look no further than Oklahoma City. I understand that you are referring to Al Queda terrorists and needing to have better security for that reason. However, woudn't it be just as easy to do this through Canada?

I also think it is worth noting that Mexico has a rather prodigious illegal immigration problem of its own...
March 9, 200719 yr Climbing in your window and coming across the border is too different things. Someone coming across the border DOES NOT provide me or this country with a physical immediate and direct threat. What if it was a terrorist(s) instead of an ILLEGAL immigrant? I would say they would be a huge threat.

" But the fact that they were met by officials and sent on their way puts a stamp of legitmacy on it. I know all about the name being written down incorrectly (or changed because it was too difficult to spell/pronounce) as my family name was not what it is now when my family made the crossing. Not to be blunt but you are an idealist, aren't you?

However, woudn't it be just as easy to do this through Canada? Both of these are valid points. 1) I agree, it would be good information to have in this situation. It would help to put things in perspective. 2) I am all for concentrating all border traffic through certain points(not just on our southern border), forcibly if need be. It would be much more secure. More or less a we don't mind you coming through where you are supposed to, but if you try to come through anything other than a checkpoint then you take your life in your own hands.
March 9, 200719 yr I want to know how many Mexicans we grant citizenship to each year - not the number of illegals. We're not talking citizenship. We're talking entry into the country. What's wrong with doing it legally?
March 9, 200719 yr Not to be blunt but you are an idealist, aren't you? Probably. I would assume that you mean that word to have a negative connotation. However, I do my part, regardless of how tiny that is on a grand scheme, to back up my beliefs.
March 9, 200719 yr I guess I shouldn't find this a surprising mentality from a country that thinks it is a woman's choice to kill a baby. It does sadden me to find as a country that we need to mine our borders.
March 9, 200719 yr We're not talking citizenship. We're talking entry into the country. What's wrong with doing it legally? Well if we are going to kill everyone that does something illegal, let's start with the drivers who make the roads unsafe for me and my family by drinking and driving. Is that the road we want to go down in this country? Kill the criminals?

Te matarán." and they cross it and get killed, how is that our fault?
March 9, 200719 yr If you put up a big sign that says "Campo de minas. No entrar. Te matarán." and they cross it and get killed, how is that our fault? So would that mindset hold up in a court of law if you mined your yard and some neighborhood kid wander onto your yard. I find it is easy to sit here and say it should be done, when in SOME cases, fathers who can't support their families in Mexico, crosses the border to find immediate work to feed his family. And we are going to kill him for that. He doesn't have time to wait until all the proper paperwork is done, he needs to feed his family NOW. Absolutely there are criminals taking advantage of this. But to mine our borders, seems extreme to me. We used to be the country that you could come to and reach all of your dreams. Now we are mining our borders.
March 9, 200719 yr What if it was a terrorist(s) instead of an ILLEGAL immigrant? I would say they would be a huge threat. I would make the assumption that it would be alot easier to come across from Canada instead of Mexico. You going to mine those NOrthern states too. Minnesota can become the state of 1,000 lakes and mines.
