I coached against that bunch of frosh, that would have been Partin's freshman year. They had less than 20 kids but from my 5 years of coaching at the freshman level they were by far the nastiest bunch I witnessed. We had a good team that year, they beat us, knocked three of our boys out of the game and sent one to the hospital, all legally. The went on to have very good success under Roy Lucas Sr.

Yup thats the squad I was refering to. That group of players really laid it on some teams during their 4 years.

I remember we turned the ball over a few times that game, I believe one was a pick and when Newport's D knew they controlled the turnover it was like a band of renegades. They steamrolled a few of our players that game.

1994 was the last time Newport played a AAA distict schedule. That was the year that Newport went 0-10.

Looks like Brewer will be the starting QB for the cats,we can get a look at him friday August the 10th as newport is suppose to scrimmage Ludlow at Newport 7:30.

Thanks for the heads up, Ill have to remember this so I can check them out.

is that following the NCC/Holmes scimmage???

I went down to check out Newport the other day and yes they had over 60 players show. Nice numbers, but how many will stick it out. Sure it would be nice to see all of them but we all know that reality is that several of them won't. As far as Tommy Wilson, good kid and a hard worker I'm sure he'll do just fine as the QB. Now as far as Brewer, the big question for this kid is -- has he mature -- I was told he quit the team during the season and he also quit the basketball team -- will he do it again? Let's hope he has mature. The incoming freshman does have a good arm but IMO he's not ready for the prime time.

Have the Cats retained their numbers from early in the summer?

How are Tommy Wilson, Billy Herald, Billy Dieters, and the rest of that defense that improved so much last season doing?

I got another chance to stop by Newport and I did notice that the numbers have dropped. I'd say they are down to about 44 kids. Still not bad numbers. As far as their defense -- seems to be on the right track so far. But as we all know -- it's a matter of how hard to they want it. :fight:
