wow, this one is a shocker. I bet a nickel to a dime that South Laurel draws Red Bird in the first round of the region. Steve Wright seems to have the magic touch when it comes to drawing numbers. Everything the man touches turns to gold.:D

Red Bird made it a few years ago. They lost in the regional finals in 1998, I think.

Clay Co. beat them in the regional finals at Manchester. Clay Co. beat Corbin by one in OT in the first round of the region(was that the infamous foul call after Corbin was celebrating the win that allowed Clay to send it to OT?)and Corbin beat Red Bird by 20 earlier in the season at Red Bird.

Do you recall exactly what year they last made it to the region? Thx.

Red Bird opened the game on an 8-0 run, and North didn't seem to be taking it very seriously. NL came back and tied it at 11 at the end of the first quarter.

NL pulled out ahead by halftime, and they must've expected Red Bird to get tired and fade down the stretch like they did last year. But RB came back, and took a lead at 37-34 with about three minutes left in the third quarter.

From that point, North cranked up its press and went on a 13-0 run over the next two minutes to go up 10, and RB started to look a bit tired.

But on the first play of the fourth, Nick Shannon was whistled for a questionable offensive foul — his second offensive foul and fourth of the game — and had to retreat to the bench.

All of a sudden, the shots start falling for RB, and North struggled to take care of the ball. C.R. Berry drove to the hole and scored, cutting the NL lead to 53-50 and drawing the fourth foul on Luke Dalton with 4:39 to go.

By this point, all the Clay folks were firmly behind RB and the momentum had completely changed. Conway had to stick Shannon back in the game.

Berry missed the foul shot, but got his own rebound after the ball was tipped around a bit, and Shannon was whistled for his fifth on another questionable call. Berry hit both free throws, and shock washed across the faces of the NL players.

Haskins hit a baseline jumper about a minute later, tying it. Seidel hit a pair of free throws to temporarily give NL the lead back with just over three minutes to play. NL wouldn't score again.

RB got every rebound down the stretch (they won the board battle 43-33), and a reeling NL struggled to take care of the ball with their PG out. Derek Davis hit a three from the left wing to put RB up for good with about 1:45 to play, and RB hit 6-of-8 FTs to ice it.

For RB:

Berry had 19 pts, 8 boards

Davis had 18 and 7

Haskins had 12 and 8

For NL:

Seidel had 25, Shannon had 13 and Wardrup had 12/6.

I remember the year Red Bird lost two clay in the region finals ... Didn't clay have the two brothers (Steve Asher and Jeremy Asher?) that played for Red Bird, but transferred to Clay?

Wasnt' that the game the dezarn kid threw his jersey in the face of keith and walked to the locker room and came back five minutes later to play?

HDE, I was listening to an interview with John D. on Williamsburg radio station during pregame of the opening game of the region that year. The radio guy asked John D. "How do you plan to pull the upset over Cawood tonight"''. John D's response was "Upset? You should ask them how they plan to upset us. We beat them by 23 during the season. We are a better team than Cawood." I thought that was a humorous answer.

Jim Schue, do you rememberr last year when RB got a big lead in the first quarter on NL, Conway took his starting 5 out for almost the whole 2nd quarter. The 2nd 5 caught RB and took the lead at the half.

I think you are correct, with them Red Bird would have been in the state tournment IMO, that would have been an awsome story. John D. Wilson gets more out of less than anyone I know. A real setback for North.
