From the article......

Heralded prospect Patrick Patterson, one of the most highly coveted recruits in UK basketball history, told the Herald-Leader that Smith was the "main reason" he was considering Kentucky. If UK were to dismiss Smith as coach, "I'd be very disappointed," Patterson said. "It'd affect my decision."

Asked whether he'd scratch UK from his list of six schools, Patterson said, "Probably."

trivial....

You can't run your program based on a high school kid's FUTURE thoughts.

These kids change their mind like shoes.

When Rick left, other players followed..it is expected.

Besides, what if PP gets hurt, academically ineligible, etc.

UK has NEVER been about one player.

Really? Sure seems like a lot of folks are ready to commit hara-kiri as soon as one top recruit goes elsewhere.

The point of my post was not about UK being about one player but pointing out (and I know it will be extremely HARD for UK fans to see this) that today's athletes come to UK because of the COACH and not because of the name on the front of the jersey. They ARE NOT tied to the history and grandeur of UK basketball and some fans think.

They DO NOT pick a collegiate basketball team to be a part of a great history. They want to know what the coach can do for them, whether they will be on television, whether they can get in the NBA from there, etc. Only players from KY look at the name across the front of the jersey.

Patterson would choose KY because OF TUBBY and not because UK is UK.

You are right about recruits.

I think playing time, tv time, nba exposure all factor in.

I was just saying that P.P. shouldn't have any influence on what happens here until he is here. :D

In the past five NCAA Tournaments, Duke has advanced past the round of 16 one time.

Kentucky has done it twice.

For all the static about Tubby and 10-loss seasons, Indiana -- which currently stands 18-9 -- has lost 10 games in a season every year but one (2000) since 1994.

Kansas has lost in the first round of the past two NCAA tournaments. With all the griping about Kentucky's Final Four drought, Tubby has never done that.

North Carolina went 8-20 in 2002. As sour as the past two UK seasons have been, the Cats have never come close to having a losing year.

In five prior years at Louisville, Rick Pitino has twice played in the NIT. Tubby has never missed the Big Dance (though, to keep that going, UK better beat Georgia on Wednesday night).

Moral: The environment for college basketball is far less favorable for the old-line powers being consistently elite than it was in the past.

But recruits aren't picking UK period. Not because of the name or Tubby. To stay at a high level and compete with the top teams you have to bring in big recruits every year. Tubby does not do that. And if PP doesn't come to UK this year what will that leave Tubby with? Another awlful recruiting year for UK. I am not saying PP is the answer to UK's problems but without him it's another mid-major recruiting class.

I wouldn't say that is accurate. You have two McD's AA's on the team.

I do agree though that the current state of recruiting needs to change and be attacked at a different angle.

Also, not many programs are bringing in top recruits EVERY YEAR.

I contend that if this JR class was living up to their billing, this wouldn't be an issue. The Sr class was recruited as role players between top classes of talent. Buike left early and hurt the program. The Junior class with Rondo leaving has been a FLOP.

Yes, the sophomore class is a negative on Tubby's resume. He needed recruits and didn't get them.

I still think the freshmen class will be a GREAT class.

So, he recruited two strong classes. One with world of potential and one that is a flop.

You look where the recruits in those two classes were coming out of HS and they should be top 5. Rondo, Morris, Bradley, Crawford have been flops.

WOULD this discussion be held if the JR class was playing up to their ability along with Rondo being coachable and staying?

So true, a lot of people would think it is the end of the world if they do not land a big recruit. Let Tubby recruit who he wants. He is a better coach when he gets the hard working Hayes types.

I was reading that Article at work today. It amazes me how some people rufuse to bring up anything positive about Tubby except that he is a good man.
